A little randomness for your Thursday

It’s only Thursday and I am tired like it’s Friday. Can it just be Friday? But I do like Thursday’s for new Grey’s…just makes a Thursday so much better!

  • my friend and I watched Black Swan on Tuesday night. Before seeing it, I had heard lots about it…both bad and good things. Let’s just say that while watching it, I said a lot of what the hell is going on?! It was quite the movie to say the least.
  • the weather has been gorgeous here for the past two days! I am talking +7C and +10C…so wonderful! Too bad they are calling for snow again this weekend and then back up to +10C next week. The warm weather is fabulous considering this is what it looked like out on the weekend:
    IMG_0158
Not the greatest picture, but gives you an idea of how much whore frost there was!
  • On Friday, I found out that I won this giveway from Kristen. So excited as I never run with any id and it’s bad. Now I just have to decide if I want black, purple or pink. Help me decide!
  • I am currently sitting on the floor with a blanket over my lap and Harley curled up on my side. Is there anything better than that?
  • Speaking of Harley, on Saturday morning I apparently did not get out of bed fast enough for him, so he decided to entertain himself. To do that, he went into our closet and basically emptied the laundry basket of my socks and underwear onto our bedroom floor. I woke up to a trail of socks and had to laugh out loud at him.
    IMG_0161
The pile of socks that Harley brought out
    IMG_0163
Mr. Harley with even more in his mouth. Silly puppy!

Have you seen Black Swan? If so, what did you think? Hope you have a great Thursday!

Training Tuesday

Although I will be starting a little late, I’ve decided to do a recap of the previous week's training. I think it will be interesting to look back after the half to see how my training went, what could have been better, etc.

Week three

Total kilometers
22.4

Cross-training
Swimming: 1250 meters, 40 minutes
Biking: 0

Other
Walking: 190 minutes

Thoughts
This week was a crappy week overall for my general mood. Let’s just say a serious case of PMS was not helping at all with my motivation. I got all of my runs in, some weren’t pretty, but I felt better once they were done.

For those of you who have trained for any race, do you include the kilometers/miles that you walked? I can’t avoid walking Harley and I am not really sure what to do with those kilometers. Ideas?

Ps- where has March gone?! I can’t believe that it’s almost over!

{weekend recap}

Another weekend has come and gone by too fast! Seriously weekends, slow down already!

Friday: I had the day off, which was awesome minus the fact that I was still up at 6:30am. Aren’t days off for sleeping in?! I took Harley for a walk in the morning and then headed to the dentist. Have I mentioned that I HATE the dentist and that I haven’t been in close to 2 years? Yeah, that made for fun when she was scaling my teeth…worst pain! After the dentist, I had some running around to do: see Mr.D at school, pick up my bridesmaid dress that came in at work and pick up my new shoes! I had bought new running shoes about two weeks ago and when I tried them out at the gym, I was having major knee and shin pain. So they were a no go for me, so I ended up going back to my old pair in the updated version. Friday night was pretty low key…I hung out at home and watched How Do You Know. How-Do-You-Know1

I usually like cheesy romantic movies, but this was pretty bad. Don’t waste your time or money!

Saturday:  On Saturday morning, I met up with Nicole at the YMCA to go for a run as the weather was not cooperating with us. It was the first time that I had met her and she is so nice! It felt like we had known each other for a while and there were no awkward first date silences, haha. We will have to go for another run when the weather warms up Nicole Smile

In the afternoon, I took Harley for a walk and then lounged again. I watched:
morning-glory-movie-poster and Life_As_We_Know_It_2

Both were pretty good, but I liked Life As We Know It better. I definitely cried at one part and would date the Dr. Sam anytime! He is seriously cute!
IMG_0164IMG_0165
how Harley and I spent the night

Sunday: I spent the morning hanging out and cleaning up the house. Later in the morning, I went to the gym and swam some laps and then took Harley for a walk. We had puppy classes in the late afternoon and that was basically our weekend.

How was your weekend? What were you up to?

{recipe friday}

Happy Friday everyone! Sorry that I haven’t been around much this week…just been so unmotivated and tired!  I promise I will be back at it next week Smile

Last night, Alison (and Cruz) and Vanessa came over to finish planning Rachel's baby shower.  Harley and Cruz played and played while the girls planned away. Rachel, you are going to have a great shower if I don’t say so myself Smile

This week’s recipe is finally for the mini banana muffins, which I promised to post last week.

Ingredients

2/3 cup sugar
1/3 cup soft margarine
2 eggs, unbeaten
1 3/4 cups all purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
1 cup mashed bananas (I use 3 to 4 bananas)
Chocolate chips (I just throw in handfuls)

Steps

  1. preheat your oven to 350F
  2. mix your sugar, margarine and eggs for 3 minutes. Add the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and bananas
  3. Grease/spray your mini muffin pan. Pour batter into the muffin pan and bake for 14-15 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the centre comes out clean

So easy to make and they are so delicious!

What are your plans for the weekend? Hope you have a great one!

motivation….are you there?

Since January, I have been great and excited about going to the gym to either run, bike, swim or workout. There really wasn’t a day in that time that I was like I DO NOT WANT TO WORKOUT. Until this week rolled around.

My motivation has totally disappeared and I have NO clue where it went to. This week I have wanted to curl up in a ball each night, eat loads of carbs and do other things that don’t include running or working out. As much as I haven’t want to, I still have gotten out and ran or swam, as I know it will make me feel better after. Which is true, it definitely does, but it’s the getting there part that sucks!

Do you think my half marathon training and weight would mind if I took this week off from running and exercising and just sat at home and eat lots of carbs? I’m going to say yes, but I wish the answer was no.

Ok enough whining, I’m off to eat another mini banana muffin. Haha.

Please tell me that I’m not the only one who loses motivation from time to time and just wants to eat carbs!

Ps- yes, the PMS monster is raging this week and I can’t help it! I’ll be back to happy posting tomorrow Smile  Only if Alison chooses me to win her giveaway of a Bondi Band Winking smile Haha.

{weekend recap}

Happy Monday everyone! How was your weekend? It went by too fast yet again Sad smile

On Friday night, we went over to our friend’s house who live up the street from us for a St. Paddy’s day party. We only knew a few people there, but it was fun to get out and meet some new people. Someone * cough, cough * Mr.D had few too many beers, so let’s just say he was feeling a little rough on Saturday morning.

On Saturday, I spent the morning cleaning up the house and trying to motivate myself to go for a run. As much as I love running, I really did not feel like going, but I forced myself to get out there and do it. As much as I didn’t want to, I felt better when I got home. Later in the afternoon, my friend K came over and went to Cross Iron Mills. I was looking for a birthday present for my dad and ended up buying a bunch for myself as well! I ended up with three dresses, a pair of dress pants, a skirt and a shirt for $85…pretty good Smile Saturday night, Mr.D went out with friends, so Harley and I hung out watching trashy tv.

On Sunday, I went to the gym to swim laps for the first time in close to a year! I ended up swimming 1250 m and it felt fantastic! Later in the day, we had puppy classes. Harley is definitely picking up stuff, so it’s been worth it so far.

Harley and I had a little photo shoot yesterday…well, he laid there and I took pictures SmileIMG_1277IMG_1281IMG_1279

{recipe friday}

**Edited: I totally forgot that I was going to post my banana muffin recipe today! I promise to do it next week :) **

Happy Friday everyone! So happy that the weekend is finally here! Did this week go by slowly or was it just me?

This weekend we are:

  • going to a St.Paddy’s day party tomorrow night at one of Mr.D’s co-workers house
  • running 6.5 k on Saturday
  • hanging out and catching up with bridesmaid/friend K
  • possibly shopping for my dad’s birthday present…men are so much fun to shop for Winking smile

This week’s recipe is for chicken orzo skillet from Campbells. We just made it last night and it was so easy and only required one pan to make! Nothing beats that. We made a few changes, which I put in italics

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp olive oil
  • 1/4 lb boneless, skinless chicken breasts cut into strips (we bought an already cooked chicken the night before and used the left over shredded chicken from that. We added the chicken with the rice)
  • 2 cups sliced button mushrooms
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 can (10 oz/284mL ) Campbells condensed low fat cream of chicken soup (I used the regular because I couldn’t find low fat)
  • 2/3 cup water (we used 1.5 cups as we used arborio rice instead)
  • 3/4 cup orzo (see above comment)
  • 1 cup shredded carrot
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tomato diced (we used a can of diced tomato)

Steps

  1. cook chicken until well browned in heated oil at medium-high heat in a large skillet. Add mushrooms, onions and garlic. Cook and stir for 3 minutes
  2. Add all other ingredients except for tomato. Mix well and bring to a boil. Reduce heat.
  3. Cover and simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Add tomato and continue to stir.

What are your plans for the weekend? Hope you have a great one!

I’ve got a confession

Ok, well I lied. I have more than one confession. Here it goes…

{one} Remember those mini banana muffins that I was talking about yesterday? Pretty sure I have had over 5 each day. They are just so mini and easy to eat! The multigrain Tostiitos that I ate last night…those I have no idea how they ended up in my stomach! But they just didn’t stop.

{two} When I work out, I will often re-wear sports bras, shorts, running tights and sometimes tank tops. Caitlin had a debate on this very topic a couple of weeks ago and it’s interesting to see people’s view on workout clothes. I personally re-wear stuff because I don’t have many sports bras or shorts, and I hate doing laundry every other day! I will also confess that I don’t wear underwear while working out. Most shorts have built in liners or I am wearing tight running tights (and hate pantylines!). Is that weird?

{three} At the beginning of January, I signed up with SparkPeople to get an idea of how many calories I was eating per day because I had hit a plateau with my weight loss. Since keep track daily (I am pretty lax on weekends with it) and increasing my running, I’ve lost another almost five pounds. Pretty happy about that!

{four} I think it’s pretty obvious as it’s all I talk about lately, but I am really coming to love running! I remember back in late 2009, I could barely run 3k without stopping and now I can finish a 10k without walking. It’s amazing what training and dedication does!

What are your confessions for today?

{what i’m loving}

Happy Wednesday everyone! Thanks for your sweet comments yesterday on my race recap post. It was a great race, minus the puking of course Smile

WILW

This week, I am linking up with Jamie’s blog ahd her {what i’m loving} Wednesday’s.

{one} The weather! It has been above zero since the weekend and it’s here to stay for a while. It almost feels like spring and I wish it will stay around! There is no complaining about being able to walk Harley in yoga pants and a light sweatshirt in March. Too bad we will get more snow, more than likely in May as that’s how Alberta rolls.

{two} Bethenny Frankell’s show called Bethenny Getting Married?
key_art_bethenny_getting_married
She is hilarious and holds nothing back! Bethenny if you are reading and need a new best friend, call me up Smile

{three} Baking! I had some bananas that were going brown, so I decided to make banana bread, but in the form of mini muffins. I seriously ate like 5 last night and couldn’t stop! Recipe to come on Friday Smile

{four} That it’s Wednesday today! I don’t know why but it feels like it should be Thursday today. Only two more days and it’s the weekend.

What are you loving this week?

Race recap

Yesterday I mentioned that I had run my first 10k on the weekend. I didn’t really elaborate on the run, but I’ll give you the full run down today Smile

The race didn’t start until 10am, so it gave me lots of time to sleep in and make it downtown for the race start. Mr.D came with me and we ended up getting there at about 9:40am. Enough time to pee and start my garmin SmileI’m not sure how many people ran the 10k, but this race was great because they started the 10k before the 5k. It was nice because I didn’t spend the first kilometer dodging walkers or slower runners.  The course was an out and back, which was nice.

I had a goal in my head of around an hour to complete it as the couple of 10ks I had run on my own were around 56-59 minutes.  To be honest I was really nervous that morning as I had no idea how I would do or if my legs would want to run 10K!IMG_1250
Getting my bib on
IMG_1252
Waiting for the race to start. I was cold and nervous at this point!
   IMG_1254
Just crossing the starting line

This run was one of those runs were everything just worked and nothing hurt. Okay, that’s not entirely true, but more on that later. The whole race I was focused on runners ahead of me and kept trying to pass one by one. At the 5k turn around, I saw a lady wearing a bright yellow jacket and focused on catching up to her. I ended up catching up around 6k and stayed steadily behind her until close to the end. It was nice to have someone to pace..I even said thanks as I passed her and I think she thought I was weird. Oh well.

My splits were:
1k: 5:44
2K: 5:20
3K: 5:17
4K: 5:22
5K: 5:22
6K: 5:20
7K: 5:18
8K: 5:26
9K:5:16
10K: 4:57
Total: 53:54!!
Overall: 11 out 129 women

I stayed pretty evenly paced except for the first and last kilometers which I am pretty happy about. And of course my time completely surprised me as I didn’t know my short little legs had that in them! The funniest part is that I had told Mr.D that I would be around 55-60 minutes, so he wasn’t anywhere near the finish line when I crossed! He had thought I would have been over 60 minutes, so I totally blew his estimate out of the water.
IMG_1255
Just after I crossed the finish line

So for the part that hurt….for most of the race, my stomach was pretty calm except for towards the end. As I crossed the finish line, I had to quickly keep running past all of the people to a garbage can where I proceeded to throw up my breakfast. Fun stuff! I am pretty sure a few people were starting, but oh well.

Minus the puking part, it was a great race and I am excited for my next 10K in April Smile

{weekend recap}

I had a fabulous weekend! Nothing in particular made it it fabulous, but it was just one of those great weekends.

Friday night was pretty relaxed. We took Harley for a walk and then went out for dinner. We just hung out at home after that as I was running my first 10k the next day.

On Saturday morning, we got up and headed downtown for my run. It was my first 10k race and I was definitely nervous! Luckily the weather warmed up and it was perfect for running. I am going to do a full recap tomorrow on the race, but it went amazing! I surpassed my goal by far! We spent the rest of the day around the house and then later that night, went to Yuk Yuk’s to see Nikki Payne's comedy show. We ended up getting seats really close to the stage and of course I got picked one! She was hilarious and definitely worth seeing. I don’t think that she’s well known outside of Canada, but she is Canadian and has been on Much Music’s video on trial.

On Sunday, I spent the day cleaning the house and then we took Harley for long walk. The weather was fabulous yesterday and we couldn’t pass it up! We had puppy class later that night and that was our weekend.

How was your weekend? What were you up to?

Ps- I updated the wedding, recipe and running tabs on my blog :)

{recipe friday}

Happy Friday everyone! I am so glad that it’s Friday…this week has seemed to drag on for some reason.

This weekend we are:

  • well I am running my first 10k on Saturday! Excited but nervous and I hope the weather cooperates
  • maybe going to Yuk Yuk’s to see a comedian
  • puppy class with Harley on Sunday

This week’s recipe is spicy sausage with dilled orzo. It is pretty simple to make and so delicious! It makes a lot, and we usually have enough for dinner, plus a big serving for lunch the next day.

Ingredients

  • 4 large sausages, preferably hot Italian
  • 4 ripe but firm tomatoes
  • 2 peppers, preferably different colours
  • 3 tbsp (45 mL) olive oil
  • 2 cups (500 mL) orzo or uncooked rice
  • 1 head broccoli, cut into small florets
  • 1 lemon
  • 1/2 tsp (2 mL) each salt and pepper
  • 1/2 cup (125 mL) each chopped fresh dill and basil or 2 tsp (10 mL) dried basil and 11/2 tsp (7 mL) dried dillweed
  • 3 green onions, thinly sliced

Steps

  1. Oil grill. Heat barbecue to medium-high. Prick sausages in several places. Thickly slice tomatoes and halve peppers. Brush with about 1 tbsp (15 mL) oil. Place all on grill. If they won't fit, add only half the tomatoes. Cook, covered, turning often. Remove tomatoes to a big baking sheet when grill marks form, 2 to 4 min. Then add remaining tomatoes. When peppers are charred and sausages cooked, 12 to 16 min, remove to the baking sheet.
  2. Meanwhile, boil orzo or rice following package directions. Two minutes before orzo or rice is cooked, stir in broccoli. Drain and turn into a big bowl. In a small bowl, whisk 2 tbsp (30 mL) each oil and lemon juice, ½ tsp (2 mL) each salt and pepper. Stir into orzo mixture. Chop grilled tomatoes and peppers. Slice sausages. Prepare herbs and onions. Stir all into orzo. Taste. Add more juice and salt if needed. Delicious warm or at room temperature. Will keep overnight in the refrigerator.

What are your plans for the weekend? Do you like recipes that others have tried first?

{what i’m loving}

Happy hump day everyone! How is your week going so far? As always, I am linking up with Jamie's blog for {what i’m loving} Wednesday’s!

WILW

{one} That my half marathon training plan has officially started this week! Not that I didn’t enjoy running for just running before, but it’s nice to be working towards a goal now. My bruised toe nail from a couple of weeks ago is finally starting to fall off, so hopefully that will be the only casualty from the training! My first run of the training plan went well last night and hopefully it stays that way Smile

{two} That things are looking up weather wise at least for a couple of days. I am so over the –20C weather that we’ve been having lately. We are supposed to be hitting the +’s this week, so fingers crossed that it happens so I can run outside.  Anyone else vote for spring to be here already?!

{three} Apparently my theme for this week is running, so let’s keep it going. I am excited that my first 10k  is on Saturday! I’ve only done a couple of 5k’s, so it will be fun to run another distance in a race.  Hopefully the warm weather sticks around to make it even better!

{four} That the doggie daycare takes pictures each day and posts them on Facebook. When they do that, we get cute pictures of Harley like this:
188219_199297210088682_149558328395904_731713_4874018_n188905_199303656754704_149558328395904_731908_1712197_n189311_199296673422069_149558328395904_731697_1471026_n

What are you loving this week? Have a great day!

Tuesday tidbits

Happy Tuesday everyone! Smile Hope your week is going well so far.

I am feeling the bullet format from last week’s post, so I thought I would stick with it.

1) My half marathon training plan has officially started this week! Last week I ran 35kms, so I think the first few weeks of the training plan are going to be a bit of step back in terms of distance. The plan calls for running 3-4 days per week with the 4th run being optional or cross training. I think I might run Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and incorporate the optional km’s on Wednesday throughout those runs.  I just know that my legs do not like running back to back days, and I don’t want to end up disliking running. I am excited that the training has officially started, but means the half is even closer!

2) Have you seen this video?

Caitlin from Healthy Tipping Point along with Peter (who created the amazing video!) are trying to get it to go viral.  Definitely worth a watch and passing it on Smile Remember you are beautiful!

3) The weather is starting to warm up here! Although it was in the –20’s this morning, we are supposed to be working our way up to the +’s by later this week. I really hope the warm weather stays around for this weekend for my first 10k race!

What are your Tuesday tidbits? Have a great Tuesday!

{weekend recap}

Happy Monday everyone! How was your weekend? Are you sad like me that it’s over already?!

Not going to lie, this weekend was REALLY low key for us. I had the day off on Friday, which involved hanging out, a bank appointment, the gym and a quick trip to the mall.  I honestly love having the option of taking shorter lunches each day and being able to have every third Friday off. Helps clear my head so much!

On Saturday, we took my car in for a quick appointment and made a quick trip to the gym.  I spent the afternoon reading the book House Rules, which I started on Friday. I was having a hard time putting it down and it was cold out, so it was the perfect weekend to spend wrapped up in a blanket on the couch reading a great book Smile That night we watched two movies…first up was 127 Hours.

127_Hours_10
It was a pretty good movie and I definitely recommend it.
The second movie was Unstoppable.
unstoppable1
It was pretty good as well!

On Sunday, it was another lazy day spent around the house reading and cleaning up. I also might have taken the best two hour nap on the couch! Haven’t done that in so long and it was wonderful! We also had our first puppy training class that night. Hopefully Harley picks up some stuff from it Smile

How was your weekend? What were you up to?
