Race report: Centaur Subaru Half Marathon

To start off this recap, I must say that for my first experience of a half marathon, I loved this experience! Everything was so organized and  enjoyed the whole run (well minus a few km’s).

Before the race
The race started at 7am, so Mr.D and I were up at 5am to drive downtown and catch a c-train to the start line. We luckily got on a train on the start of the line, so by the time we reached the race stop, it was crowded. We got there at about 6:30ish and it was still pretty chilly out, but luckily the sun was making it’s way out.
photo (9)
I thought ahead and wore big sweatpants and a warm jacket, and I am glad I had both. I ditched both about 10 minutes before the race. I had to nervous pee (TMI?), but the lines were super long for the port-o-potties, so I decided to hold it.  The race had an organized bag drop area, but because Mr.D was with me, I didn’t have to use it.

The race
There were about 3,000 people running the half marathon, so the starting line was pretty crowded. The whole race was actually pretty crowded, but I kind of liked having people around me to ‘catch up to’ rather than running alone. I could have done without the dodging of people a lot of the time though. photo (9)
Even though there was a crowd throughout the entire race, I maintained my pace pretty much throughout the race.   Here is my break down:

  1. 5:30
  2. 5:33
  3. 5:26
  4. 5:26
  5. 5:27
  6. 5:33
  7. 5:28
  8. 5:31
  9. 5:45 <—water station
  10. 5:29
  11. 5:35
  12. 5:36
  13. 5:40 <—turn around point
  14. 5:32
  15. 5:45 <-- water station
  16. 5:36
  17. 5:41
  18. 5:41 <—my knees were starting to act up here
  19. 5:45
  20. 5:39
  21. 5:39
  22. 1:13

The water stations were every 3km’s and they had a both Gatorade and water. I ended up going through almost every station and then drinking a bit of my own water in the last few km’s. Between the water and Gatorade, I used sport beans every couple of km’s and they definitely helped.

The course was pretty flat with the exception of two overpasses, which had a slight incline, but nothing compared to the hills that are in Calgary. There were a few cheering sections, but there was mostly no crowd support.

In the last few km’s, my knees and hips were starting to get really sore and I had to use Kristen's mantra of “it only hurts for now”. Definitely helped me through those last few km’s!

My final time:
image
[I think they messed up the gun and chip time because my chip time should have been faster than my gun time]

I am still so excited and proud of myself that I managed to run my first half marathon in under two hours! I was thinking 2:15ish, but it’s amazing what you can accomplish if you put your mind to it.

Finish line/ after the race
Not surprisingly, the finish line was just as crowded as the rest of the race. As soon as I crossed the finish line, there was a volunteer putting a medal over my neck. I don’t think there is a better feeling than that!
IMG_1298
As soon as I made it out of the finishers area, I met up with Mr.D and we went to get me some food. They had bananas, oranges, juice boxes, granola bars, etc. I wasn’t feeling super hungry, but I knew I needed to eat something so I had a banana. We didn’t stick around for a long time and we ended up missing meeting up with Nicole! Sad smile

Overall, I loved this race and the whole experience! Minus the stiff knees, and hungry that took the whole day to get rid of, I am ready for my next half! Come on September!

{weekend recap}

I forgot to mention yesterday, but my full race recap will be coming tomorrow Smile

{friday} Mr.D had a work event that night, so it was Harley and I hanging out Smile I took Harley for a walk and then went to the gym to do a quick run as it was still raining. Other than that, I just hung out and then went to pick up Mr.D

{saturday} In the morning, we went to the the race expo. Nicole and Kirst both let me know that it was really busy on the Friday night, so I am glad we ended up going on the Saturday. We got there just after 10, and there was already a line up for the half marathon package pick up. Not surprising as there was over 3,000 people running it! We got my package and then did a quick walk through the expo and left. We headed to Olive Garden for lunch. Such a great decision! The rest of the day was spent just hanging out. I was in bed by 10:30 as we had a 5am wake up call!

{sunday} We were up bright and early for the race! Full race recap to come tomorrow Smile After the race, Mr.D did yard work while I enjoyed a fabulous nap on the couch Smile We went out for dinner with some friends and that was pretty much it. We were both pretty tired!

How was your weekend? What were you up to?

Race day update

I just wanted to quickly say that I survived my first half marathon and actually enjoyed it! Still waiting on my final chip time, but I am pretty sure it was around 2 hours, which I am SUPER happy about! And there was no puking at the finish line. Definitely a successful race Smile

Thank you again to everyone who sent me emails, text messages, blog shout outs or Facebook messages to wish me luck and congratulate me on my finish. It honestly means the world to me!

Best part of finishing a race? Definitely the medal!

Here goes nothing!

Well, there is officially less than 24 hours until my first half marathon. Still stunned that twelve weeks of training have gone by already and the big day is here tomorrow!

photo (8)

All of my stuff has been laid out, my Garmin and i-pod are charging and new music has been added to my running playlist. I am definitely still nervous, but excited for tomorrow morning.

Here goes nothing!

ps- thank you to everyone who emailed or left shout outs of good luck on their blogs for me! I definitely appreciate it! Smile

{happy friday}

Happy Friday everyone! I was supposed to be off today, but decided to Monday off instead to relax and hopefully rest my legs.

This weekend, I am:

  • going to the race expo on Saturday and then out for lunch to the Olive Garden for a big bowl of pasta! I don’t know who is more excited, Mr.D or I?
  • running my first half marathon on Sunday! I am definitely excited, but nervous at the same time
  • Might I say wearing my deserved medal around on Sunday?!

On a really random note, when I was picking Harley up from doggie day care on Wednesday, the lady working was asking when Harley was born and where we got him from. Turns out, that a new puppy had come in and one of the girls recognized the birth date and place and linked Harley and the other dog together. I left my email address and the lady emailed me tonight. She sent me pictures of her puppy and they look EXACTLY the same! She actually lives in the community next to ours, so we plan on getting the dogs together. Small world hey?

What do you have planned for the weekend? Have you ever had a ‘small world’ experience?

Three Things Thursday

Happy Thursday everyone! I am really liking these "would you rather” themes for three things thursday’s. Your answers always make me laughSmile

Ok, so for the questions this week:

1. Would you rather be best friends with Oprah OR Ellen Degeneres?  Oprah may say “you get a car, you get a car, you get a car!” but Ellen is definitely funnier!
EllenDeGeneresOprah

2. Would you rather live in a tree for two weeks and you can’t get down until the two weeks is over OR live in a shark tank for a week?

3. Would you rather have a tail like a dog OR be covered in hair like the world’s hairiest man?

{what i’m loving} & a giveaway winner!

Happy Wednesday everyone! The rain stopped for a bit yesterday AND it is supposed to now just be overcast on Sunday which I can handle. Fingers crossed it stays that way!

The winner of my giveaway from last week is Kae from Barefeet make me happy! Congratulations Kae! Please send me an email at bestthingislove [@] gmail [.] com so I put you in touch with Alison.

*******************************************

This week, I am loving:

{one} New tv series! Mr.D started watching a show called Sons of Anarchy about a motorcycle gang. I didn’t get that into it when he was watching the first few episodes but I LOVE it now. I can’t wait for the work day to be over so I can come home and watch it, it’s that bad. Have you seen it? A definite must watch if you don’t mind a bit of violence.

{two} That it’s tapering time! I still can’t believe that twelve weeks of training is almost over and my first half marathon is almost here. Fingers crossed for no rain on Sunday!

{three} Short work weeks! This week is short because of the holiday Monday in Canada and then I have this coming Monday off instead of Friday so I can relax after my half. Love it!

What are you loving this week?

Training Tuesday

As I am a week behind on my weekly training recaps, it means that this week is taper time. Still blows my mind that the past almost twelve weeks have gone by already.

Week Eleven

Total Kilometers
36

Cross-Training
Swimming: 0
Biking: 0
Insanity: 40 minutes

Other
Walking: 11. 4

Thoughts
This week was one of my worst training weeks in regards to my runs. I had major PMS and was feeling tired and grumpy overall, so none of my runs during the week went well. I am happy to say that my last long run of 16k, which I did on Sunday was MUCH better than the rest of my runs.  My long run went pretty good overall. I had zero cramps, which was awesome. The weather was a little warm out and I ran out of water at 13k, so my last three 3k’s were slower. But overall, happy with how it went and it’s amazing to know that I indeed can do this!

After my long run on Sunday, I had the most delicious glass of chocolate milk. I was inspired by Amber and Lisa and it is the greatest idea ever!

Questions
1. Any last minute tips, pieces of advice for race day? Anything I need to know?!

2. If you check out the weather forecast below (not that I am stalking it or anything!) you can see that it will more than likely be raining on Sunday. What should I wear? I’ve been lucky to escape the rain so far while training so I have no idea what to wear! Help!

Here I come Calgary marathon! Please be nice to me Smile

{weekend recap}

Happy Monday everyone! Even though it is currently raining here, I am off today so there is no complaining from me. Feels weird to be home on a Monday, but I will take it Smile

{friday} We went over to a friend’s house for drinks and appetizers. We didn’t stay out late, but it was still fun to hang out and just chat.

{saturday} In the morning, we had to drive to a kennel outside of town to look at for Harley’s vacation in August. It turned out to be a nice and clean place, so hopefully Harley likes it. After looking at the kennel, Mr.d went biking with some friends and I went shopping. Totally equal right? Smile I had to find new shorts because most of mine don’t fit anymore. I had some luck and found two pairs, a sweater, a skirt and two pairs of sandals.

{sunday} After I got my lazy butt up, I went for my last long run of 16k. Still blows my mind that the training cycle is almost over and that I am up to running 16k! The run went really well and I will say more tomorrow. After the run, we went to get groceries and run some other errands. It was sprinkling on and off that afternoon, so we fit in a walk with Harley between the showers.

How was your weekend? What were you up to?

ps- make sure you enter my giveaway! It ends soon!

{happy friday}

Happy Friday everyone! So excited that the long weekend is here! Now if only the weather would cooperate :(

Last night, Alison and I went to Rachel's to see her and to meet little Henry. He is seriously adorable! I couldn't help but stare at him while I was holding him. We definitely need to come visit again soon Rachel!

This weekend, we have no major plans. We have to go check out a kennel for Harley on Saturday and then I am doing my long run on Sunday. Other than that, we are making no plans and enjoying the weekend!

To my Canadian readers, I hope you have a great long weekend!

What do you have planned for this weekend?

Three Things Thursday

Hooray for Thursday! One more work day and it's the long weekend! So excited :)

This week's Three Things Thursday is going to be another one like last week of the "would you rather" theme. I like it so we are sticking to it. {ps- I just noticed that in last week's post I put what you rather instead of would you rather. Really need to proof read Leigh!}

1. Would you rather run a marathon and poop your pants or be locked in a very dirty and full port-o potty for a day?

2. Would you rather be attacked by a shark or by an alligator?

3. Would you rather buy a winning lottery ticket only to lose it before you can cash in or win a really expensive car only to crash it the next day?

Let's hear your answers! Remember there is no choosing neither...you must pick one :)

Ps- don't forget to enter my giveaway! It is open until Tuesday.

A review: Delta Pilar faucet with touch20 technology

Remember this faucet that I won and we finally installed last weekend? Well I am finally getting around to reviewing it!

Let’s see where to start besides saying that I love it! The faucet is a Delta Pilar kitchen faucet with touch20 technology. Such cool technology.

photo (6)

The faucet arrived very quickly, but due to Mr.D and I being unable to install it by ourselves, we had to wait for back up to help us. {thanks again Alison and Justin!} From what I can tell, the directions were very detailed and easy to follow if you have never installed a faucet before. The installation was relatively easy. The only thing that I would recommend is that you don’t attempt to cut a new hole in a stainless steel sink! Well it was a bit of a pain for the boys, it ended up working out and you will never be able to tell.

Once installed, the faucet was really simple and easy to figure out how to use. All you have to do is ensure that the fixture (it is in the far left corner of the sink in the picture above) that controls the pressure, temperature and whether the tap is on or off, is actually on. This is done by pulling the fixture away from yourself. Once the fixture is turned on, you can then touch the faucet anywhere and it will turn on and off. The only thing we found at first was that it can be sensitive at times. Meaning you really have to touch it to turn it on/off, while other times you can lightly touch it and it will respond.

Overall, I am in love with this faucet! So easy to easy and makes doing dishes fun Smile

I had a video explaining the faucet, but it won’t let me upload it for some reason. Darn!

What is your favourite appliance or feature in your home?

Training Tuesday

Holy moly! Less than two weeks people! That still blows my mind.

Week Ten

Total Kilometers
34.5

Cross-training
Swimming: 0
Biking: 12.8 kilometers, 44 minutes
Insanity: 0
No More Trouble Zones: 20 minutes

Other
Walking: 21 kilometers

Thoughts
Overall, another good training week. The wind has been absolutely nuts here for the past week, so it’s made for some tougher runs. It can go away any day now!

My long run of 14.5k on Saturday went well. I will admit there were a few times that I walked for 30 seconds as my head wasn’t completely in the run. I kept doubting my running ability, which I know I can do this!

Questions
I carry two small bottles in my ifitness belt which I can easily finish during my longer runs, but I find that even if I drink just a little water/gatorade, I easily get cramps. Is there any way to prevent them or help them go away faster? They can be so painful that I have to stop running until it subsides.

If you get cramps while running, how do you get rid of them? Is there anyway to prevent them?

{weekend recap}

Boo to you Monday! I wasn’t quite ready for you to be here again. At least next weekend is a long weekend. I am quite looking forward to that!

{friday} We went back to MEC to see if they could do anything about my broken cycling shoe, but unfortunately they couldn’t. We then went to a couple other bike stores to see if they had screws long enough, but we were only able to find 3/4. Hopefully we can find another one or else these shoes are going back. Too bad because they are cute!

{saturday} I went for my second to last long run before my half. Still can’t believe it’s less than two weeks away now. This week’s run was 14.5k, which was okay. It was super windy yet again here, but the tail wind was nice on the way back (I did an out and back loop) as it was helping to push me up the hills! One more long run and it’s half time! While I was running, Mr.D went biking with a co-worker and Justin. The rest of the day was spent lounging around and getting some groceries. My legs weren’t too sore, but I was more tired than anything.

{sunday} I spent the morning vacuuming and cleaning up around the house. Don’t you love being an adult?! In the afternoon, Alison, Justin and Cruz came over for dinner, puppy date and to help install the faucet {that I still can’t believe I won!}photo (7)
Tired puppy!

It was quite the task for the boys, but it got installed. While the boys were working, Alison and I chatted and Cruz and Harley played forever. Those two have endless amounts of energy.
photo (6)
The new faucet. So pretty! Review coming later this week.

Thanks again for all of the help Justin!

How was your weekend? What were you up to?
