Best of 2013

The past couple of years I have done a year in review post (2011part one and part two/  2012 part one and part two), but decided to switch it up this year. I decided to do a post with the best of theme for 2013.

Best book read

This is a tough one for me! Goodreads sent me an email the other day that I had read 119 books in 2013....that's crazy! Some were definitely better than others. Top of my list would have to be:
Best hair cut 

It would definitely have to be when I chopped my hair off in October! So worth losing all of that hair for.

Best race

I ran six races this year, but nothing compares to crossing the finish line of your first full marathon! A lot of training and time went into this race, and I was so happy to have completed it.


 
Best place traveled to

Ooh, this a tough one! I was a very lucky girl in 2013 and got to travel to: Ireland, Wales, England, France, Italy and Spain. I loved everywhere we went, but Positano and Barcelona will always hold a special place in my heart.

Five on Friday


{one} thanks for playing along with my questions yesterday! I love hearing people's answers and why they'd choose one option over the other. The first question popped into my mind because I stopped in at a running store the other night, and the sales person was helpful, but talked my ear off!

{two} I had a dentist appointment yesterday. As much as I love having clean teeth, I have never been a dentist lover. I still get nervous going. Anyone else?

{three} how is it almost Christmas?!

{four} I think I picked a color to paint our basement....I choose santorini blue. It looks different on all of the walls I tried it on last night...hopefully it turns out!

I have no reason why I've been slacking on blogging this week....well I lied. I've been super tired and haven't had any desire to blog. Curling up on the couch with my Kobo and a blanket was MUCH more appealing.

Five on Friday


{one} who else is super excited that it's Friday?! This week has been very busy and hectic, so I am so ready for the weekend.

{two} we have two Christmas parties for both of our works tonight. Looking forward to both of them!

{four} besides the Christmas parties tonight, we don't have much planned this weekend. Well, I'm going to bake a whole bunch of cookies. Ginger bread men and sugar cookies to be exact :)

Canadian Blogger Christmas Swap 2013: link up


Before I start sharing my package, I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who participated this year :) I love that everyone wants to join in and that I am able to find new blogs to read :)

My swap partner was Lindsey (I promise I didn't rig the partners...that's the name that came up when I drew names!). Lindsey sent me an awesome package with lots of stuff! Workout Tuesday


Let's talk about the workouts that I did last week:

12/2

  • 4.2km walk with Harley
  • at home workout of:
100 squats
100 push ups
100 sit ups
100 walking lunges
  • I finished in just over 21 minutes
12/3
  • CrossFit workout of push jerk
  • worked up to 102.5lbs, which was a PR for me! I am surprised with this as I haven't been lifting a lot of weights lately
12/4
  • CrossFit workout which was Fight Gone Bad. This workout is structured as follows:
3 rounds for time of:
Wallballs
SDLHP
Box jumps
Push press
Rowing
1 min rest
  • I used 55lbs and 10lbs for the wallballs. I managed to get 253 reps, which was high for me. I will have to use more weight next time

  • CrossFit workout of:
21, 15, 9 reps of:
Overhead squat (used 55lbs)
Pull ups
  • I finished in just under 9 minutes and managed to do all of the OHS unbroken. Pull ups were unassisted but very broken up. I need to get better and stronger with them!

Highlights of the weekend

Happy Monday everyone! For those of you in Alberta, did you manage to stay warm? Fingers crossed these freezing temperatures go away or give us a break soon.

{friday} Mr.D's work organized a group of tickets for the Flames game, so we decided to buy some. I have never been to a Flames game since we've lived in Calgary, so it was fun to experience. Our seats weren't the greatest, but it will still a fun night :)

{saturday} we were up early to pack our bags and head to Edmonton for our niece's birthday party. We spent the afternoon at the party and then helped to clean up. After the party, we headed back to my in-laws house to take Harley for a walk. He had been cooped up all last week because of the frigid temperatures, so he was running around like crazy in the snow! After our walk, we went out to grab some dinner and then spent the night in front of the fire and watched a movie.

{sunday} Mr.D headed back to Calgary, but I have to be in Edmonton for work, so I stayed the night at my in-laws. My MIL and I ran some errands in the afternoon and then I made dinner for my in-laws. The rest of the night was spent watching tv, blogging and hanging out in front of the fire :)

Currently..

I'm currently...

Feeling...excited that Christmas is coming and that our tree is up and my shopping is done.

Writing...not too much. I've been slacking on the blog posts lately and need to step up my game!

Reading... no books at the moment. I go through periods where I just devour books and then other times I don't feel like reading at all. 

Listening.... to Christmas music and lots of it! 

Eating... yummy dinners made by Mr.D. Along with my writing motivation, my cooking motivation has gone too. 

Wishing... that I had a tropical vacation planned. I would never say no to a week on the beach doing nothing but swimming, reading and relaxing.

Enjoying... looking at our Christmas tree every time I walk up or downstairs :)

Drinking... Diet Coke. I bet that surprised no one ;)

Learning...that stress and myself don't go well together.

Thinking... about marathon training and how I hope this winter isn't too snowy.

Loving... that our tree is up and decorated. I'm also loving that I am planning on making Christmas cookies soon!

  • 8.73km {5:16/km pace} run with Harley. It was a gorgeous afternoon for it!

  • 4.75km walk with Harley
  •  another at home tabata workout of:
Snatch
Single leg deadlift to shoulder press
Downward dog abs
Burpee to shoulder press
Russian Twists
For tabata workouts, there are 8 rounds of each exercise. Each round is 20 seconds on with a 10 second rest. So, you would do 8 rounds of snatch, then 8 rounds of single leg deadlift to shoulder press, etc.
I've included a short video of the exercises below as it's easier to demo the movements then try and explain them. Hope it helps! Let me know if you have any questions about the exercises.

The weekend

Happy Monday everyone! We are currently under a blizzard warning....oh winter in Canada, how wonderful you are ;) I wrote this post last night, so I am crossing my fingers that they were wrong, and we don't get 10-20cms of snow. I was actually starting to enjoy running outside again. 

{friday} we met up with Alison, Justin and Delainey for pizza at The Rock. It was great catching up with them and getting to see Delainey again. After dinner, we ran a couple of errands and then headed home. I quickly got into pj's (best part of the weekend!) and we watched a movie.

{saturday} we were off early in the morning to drop off the presents for my work. We adopted four seniors this year as a secret Santa, which was a neat idea. After dropping off the presents, we headed to Crossiron Mills. Mr.D's birthday is coming up and he wanted a couple things at the Reebok store. I lucked out and everything was 30% off, so we scored everything for a great price! I was also able to find a couple Christmas presents and things for myself too :) After the mall, we headed home and I took Harley for a 8.75km run. It was such a nice afternoon for a run! The rest of the afternoon and night were spent wrapping some presents, finishing our Christmas cards and hanging out.

{sunday} Mr.D and Justin were off early to go biking in the mountains (crazy boys!), so I headed out to get groceries and stop at Target. After that, I took Harley for a long walk and then decorated our Christmas tree. 

Another weekend that went by too quickly!

Wanted: a marathon training partner

After seeing on Twitter that Lindsey signed up for the half marathon and Danielle for the 10k at the Calgary Marathon, I decided to stop procrastinating and sign up! I am officially running the marathon again on June 1, 2014. 

As you know, I trained and ran with my friend Erica. I loved the experience and am still working on convincing her to run it again, but not sure if I will be successful. Erica, if you are reading- you know you want to train and run it with me!!

That being said, I am searching for a new training partner. It's not easy to find someone that you would want to spend that much time training with and that runs the same pace as you. I am hoping to take time off my next marathon and would love to PR. It doesn't matter what part of the city they are in as I would be willing to drive south for new running routes. So, if anyone knows a friendly, out-going runner that would be interested in training with me (goal time would be around 4:15), let me know! 

I also put my name in to share my journey to the starting line. Fingers crossed they choose me!

Workout Tuesday

Happy Tuesday! Last week was another busy week with traveling for work and not being home. I still managed to fit in a couple of workouts. So ready to get back on track with my working out, running and eating. Feeling kind of heavy right now and not liking it!

11/18
  • rest day as I was traveling for work and got in later
11/19
  • HIIT class at Blitz Conditioning in Edmonton. I contacted Chris on Twitter, and he invited me to try a class for free. I ended up walking there as it wasn't too far from my hotel and gave me a chance to get even more exercise in. I decided to try the HIIT class, which was a mix of body weight exercises and some with a weight. For being 20 seconds on and 10 seconds off for most of the exercises, I worked up quite the sweat and worked a lot of different muscles! It was fun to try something new.
11/20
  • Tabata workout in my hotel room. Another great option if you don't have access to a gym. All you need is your body and a timer. I found a free app called Round Timer, which works perfectly. I did sit ups, burpees, forward alternating lunges and side dips. 
11/21
  • another rest day due to not getting home until 9:45pm
11/22
  • 4.2km walk with Harley
11/23
  • birthday WOD with Mr.D and some friends. We did:
21, 15, 9 reps of:
Overhead squats with 55lbs
Burpees
  • a lung burner for only being 6 minutes long!
11/24
  • another rest day as I was super tired!
Last week, Courteney left a comment asking what hand release push ups are. I made a quick video demonstrating them from your knees and from your toes. Your hands don't have to come off the ground very far in the bottom either. Hopefully that helps explain them!

Highlights of the weekend

Sorry for dropping off the face of blogging last week....I was out of town for work again and didn't bring my laptop with me. I got home late on Thursday night and had no desire to do anything but sleep!

Let's see what we were up to this weekend:

{friday} the night was spent taking Harley on a walk, catching up on TV shows, and packing my bag again

{saturday} we were up early to drop Harley off with a friend who was watching him overnight. After we dropped him off, we made the three hour drive to Mr.D's home town. We met up with some friends as it Mr.D's good friends 30th birthday. We did a birthday WOD and then headed to my in-laws house for a quick visit. Later that night, we met up with our friends again for dinner at a Greek restaurant, which was quite the experience! They had a lady belly dancer that came around and it was quite the sight to see. After dinner, we headed back to a friend's house to play beer pong and cards against humanity. Seriously fun game! Not sure how I managed it, but we didn't get home until 3am. WAY later than I've stayed out in a long time.

{sunday} we were up around 8:30am and left shortly after to drive back home to get Harley. The rest of the day was spent having a glorious 3 hour nap, doing laundry and catching up on more TV shows.

A busy and tiring weekend, but still fun :)

Happy Saturday!

Happy Saturday everyone! I am currently cuddling up in a hotel bed while the snow falls outside. I was at a course for work Tuesday until today and was hoping to head home, but mother nature had other plans. There was a major accident that shut the highway down about 30 minutes from home, so I decided to stay another night and hope that tomorrow is better. I'd really like to be home tomorrow as I am gone again on Monday until Thursday for another work related thing. I miss my bed, Mr.D and Harley :(

Happy Tuesday everyone! We had a very laid back, relaxing weekend. It included walks with Harley, some Christmas shopping, lots of Scandal watching and some CrossFit classes. It was exactly what I needed as I am going to be busy at work for the next two weeks.

  •  this workout was hard for some reason. It was my first time doing toes to rings and they were harder than I thought they were going to be.

Five on Friday


 Happy Friday everyone! This week has seemed extra long and work has been busy yet again. The next two weeks are busy at work too, so I am more than ready for the weekend.

{one} Mr.D and I have recently started watching Scandal and I'm addicted. I'm not a big political person, but love this show.

{two} I've been working on our Christmas card and think I've finally made one that I like. I really want to print it on cardstock or similar paper, but not sure where to go to get it done. Someone suggested Staples, but does anyone else have any ideas?

{three} now that it's dark when I take Harley for a walk after work, I've been creeping in people's windows to check out how they decorate their house. I promise it's not as creepy as it sounds! I just like to get ideas and it's a great way to do it :)

{four} I have zero motivation to run lately. I think it has to do with it being dark after work now and it getting cold and snowy. Someone send me some motivation!

A quick and easy DIY Christmas project


On the weekend, Mr.D was out of town so I had some spare time to myself. I was at Wal-Mart and saw some wooden letters on sale, so I quickly knew what I wanted to do with them.

Items
  • wooden letters (mine were 65 cents per letter)
  • paint
  • glitter
  • paint brush
  • floral wire
  • mod podge
Steps
  1. paint your letters in your choice of paint colour.
  2. after applying the second coat of paint, sprinkle the glitter all over the letters.
  3. once the paint and glitter has dried, apply a thin of coat of mod podge. I found this helped to keep the glitter on and not fall off every time I moved the letters.
  4. Using a drill and small drill bit, drill holes into your letters to join them together with the floral wire.
  5. Hang up and enjoy :)

  • I didn't feel like working out, so handed out candy to the kids instead :)

  • 6.0km {5:07/km pace} run with Harley. What a great run!
11/2
  • 5.0km walk with Harley
  • I went to open gym with Erica and we did 'Grace', which is 30 clean and jerks for time.  I used 75lbs, which I used the last time. I finished in 4:48, which is a 10 second PR for me!
11/3
  • 5.0km walk with Harley
  • Snatch 2, 2, 2, 2, 2- worked up to 70lbs, which is a 5lb PR

Highlights of the weekend: birthday special

First, thank you for all of your comments on Mr.D's birthday post yesterday. I love that he writes them for me and am starting to think he should start writing my blog! You can find his previous posts here, here and here.

Second, if you were wondering what the heck the title was about, it has to do with my MIL and her thinking I was turning 25 this year. How sweet of her ;)

Third, to those that asked or might be wondering what Mr.D was eluding to about the changes to come next year....no, I am not pregnant and that was not an announcement. One of the things that I asked Mr.D for was a blog make over. So that was the changes to come in the next little while :) Maybe it will be a pregnancy announcement next year :)

Onto the birthday weekend...

Friday night I took Harley for a walk and then we ran to the mall as I had to pick a couple things up. I also wanted to buy a new iphone, but was unable to because I just renewed my license and didn't bring my passport with me (you need a government issued id)

Saturday morning I went to a CrossFit class and got my butt kicked by OHS and rowing. After the workout, I met Mr.D for breakfast at Cora's and then I went to finally get a new phone. Lots of calls and discussion with Bell later, I was able to keep my plan and I was happy with that (the new plans suck big time!). After breakfast we ran to CrossIron Mills to exchange a few things. After the mall, we headed home and my in-laws came into town. They kindly took us out for dinner to The Keg and I was stuffed! 

Sunday when we got up the snow had already started. YUCK! After my in-laws left, I spent the morning doing laundry and cozying up with my book under my new super fuzzy blanket that Mr.D bought me. In the afternoon, I headed to Alison's house for her baby shower. So many yummy treats!

Overall, a great birthday weekend minus the snow of course. I was spoiled by Mr.D, my family and my friends. A great birthday indeed :)

Happy 25th (27th) Birthday!!

My wife must fancy me being a wordsmith because she keeps asking me to write her birthday posts. As a Science teacher I have never been considered one with an expressive vocabulary outside of using technical terms like "valence shell orbital hybridization" or "kinetic coefficient of friction", but allow me to wow you with my linguistic skills. (Can you tell that I am a huge nerd?)

This year was the year of the marathon and travel. Just a heads up for anyone who has a significant other who is planning on running a marathon, it so easy to be supportive.  My roll as the supportive husband involved me sitting at home and hanging out with Harley while Leigh ran disgusting distances with a friend. She thanked me for supporting her with her running. You're going to thank me for sitting on my fat ass? I can get behind that, no problems here :)  And race day? Let me tell you about race day.  I drove downtown close to the 10 km point, parked, cheered as Leigh ran by, and then popped into the Galaxy Diner for breakfast. If you've never been to Galaxy Diner, you've never really had breakfast. Its so damn good, I got to feast on delicious smoked meat hash while Leigh was completing her first half of the marathon. After I ate, I biked to the 20 km point, cheered as Leigh ran by, and rode to the next point. This continued until the end of the race, in which my job was to go get the car and take the girls (Leigh and a friend) to Wendy's. If that is my job as a supportive husband, I can't wait for Leigh to run another marathon!

Leigh also got to travel to Ireland in the spring with her mom, leaving me at home with Harley for a week and a half. Since Leigh moved out west from Ontario, that was the longest time we have been apart, and it was a good confirmation that I would not last very long without her in my life. I missed her every day she was away, but I was so excited that she finally got to have a taste of Europe. I'm sure she has spoken about Ireland in previous posts, but I doubt she said too much about what I did here while she was gone. I do a good deal of the cooking in this house, but I know now that if I am just cooking for me, the nutritional value of my meals decreases significantly. Chinese buffet sounded like a good idea a couple nights, probably a couple more times than was good for me, but what the hell, didn't have anyone around to tell me it was a bad idea. Harley and I got to spend some quality time together, but we both missed Leigh. We were both very happy when she came home.

Leigh and I were fortunate enough to spend three weeks together in Europe in August. The challenge of being apart for a week and a half rivals the challenge of being together every moment of every day for three weeks. I know I was nervous that Leigh and I would get sick and tired of each other after one week, never mind three weeks, but I knew that if we didn't kill each other then the trip with strengthen our relationship. I must say that I was pleasantly surprised that we didn't really fight at all on our trip. Oh, we had moments, as any couple would when spending so much time together, but those moments were short lived and quickly forgotten. Leigh asked me what my favorite part of the trip was, but I had a hard time choosing one. I enjoyed every day of our time together, and my favorite part was getting to experience everything with the love of my life. Europe is very interesting and exciting, but it would not have been the same without Leigh.
Yes, this is Leigh in a Europe sized car :) Anyone who will climb into a mini car like this to put a smile on my face is a keeper.

This is a photograph represents how my life feels living with Leigh. Every day is a beautiful sunset, and I will try to make every day for the rest of Leigh's life feels like a beautiful sunset as well.

Well, another birthday come and gone, next year Leigh's blog should look a little different, but I'll let her explain what that will entail. I'll leave this post with a photo of Leigh from her 21st birthday, the first one I got to celebrate with her, and it was one of the first times that I could picture myself being with her for a real long time.

 
She is still as lovely today as she was 6 years ago :)

Five on Friday


{one} so glad it's Friday! It has been another crazy, busy week at work. I think this weekend is going to be a good one minus the snow that is in our forecast :(

{two} who watched this week's episode of Sons of Anarchy? I didn't see that coming with Tara. Woozers! Does that mean she was never actually pregnant? Do you think her lawyer and Jax's ex knew how far she was going to go?

{three} speaking of Sons of Anarchy, my mom sent me an awesome tank top with Jax on the front of it. Now if I was only as bad ass as a biker babe ;)

{four} Mr.D is writing me a birthday post again this year :) Look for it tomorrow! :)

{five} I had an awesome workout last night at CrossFit. Everything just worked and even though I was tired, I felt strong.

    • I really struggle with this movement, but with a little one on one help from one of the coaches, it finally all made sense in my head! Nothing beats that feeling.
10/17
  • 5.0km run {4:54/km pace}  run with Harley. I NEVER see average paces in the 4's, so I was stoked after this run! Everything just felt so good.

  • 5.0km walk with Harley

  • 4.0km walk with Harley
  • CrossFit workout called "Lift up Luke" which was in support of autism research. The workout was:

A little randomness

We had a really quiet weekend with nothing to report, so you get a bunch of randomness today.

  • I haven't had much desire to read lately, but I finally found some books to spark my desire the other day. I finished Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson and Pushing the Limits by Katie McGarry. Both were really good!
  • I am toying with the idea of signing up for a CrossFit competition in the new year. Now I just need to find myself a partner. Anyone interested?!
  • there is no need to post a link to your post multiple times (more than five) in a day. If someone wants to read it, they will seek out your post.
  • less than a week until my birthday...do you have my present ready? ;)
  • I don't get why people brag about the drinking they do. Maybe it's because I'm not a big drinker, but we are not in high school/university anymore.
  • I have been looking for the perfect striped dress for a while and finally found one this weekend. Even better? It was only $11.99 at the Gap outlet. Score!

Highlights of the weekend

Happy Tuesday everyone! How was your Thanksgiving for those Canadians? Mine consisted of gorgeous fall weather, lots of food and time spent with family.

{friday} Mr.D went biking with a friend, so I took Harley for a walk and then went to the mall. I am having zero luck shopping lately. I either don't like anything in the stores or feel like I am between sizes. Who wants to go shopping for me?!

{saturday} we made the drive to Mr.D's parents house, which is three hours away. We took Harley for a walk down in the river valley and the weather was perfect for it! Later on, we dropped by our friend's house to visit with them and meet their baby. After our visit, we met up with Mr.D's parent's at a local pub, where friends of theirs were playing in a band. Sad to say that my in-laws stayed out WAY later than Mr.D and I. We were in bed by 11pm! Haha, so lame.


{sunday} in the morning, I took Harley for a 11km run. Near the end of our run, I spotted a coyote so we quickly got out of that area! The rest of the day was spent helping with dinner, spending time with family and eating lots of good food :)
 

{monday} we left early in the morning as Mr.D had plans to go biking again with a friend. After he left to go biking, I went to get some groceries, did some cleaning, and took Harley for a long walk. It was another gorgeous fall day in Calgary!

Just in case anyone was wondering, Harley loves tomatoes! The little devil cleared my MIL's garden of the left over ones. Jokes on him though because apparently he doesn't chew them, so however it goes in, it comes back out that way. Probably way too much information, but still hilarious!
