A very late weekend recap

My visit home has come and gone :( Why do they always have to go so fast?! I didn't take very many pictures this weekend, but let's see what I got up to:
  • flew home on Thursday night. My mom picked me up from the airport and we stopped for a quick dinner
  • Friday was spent going to a couple small towns including the one I grew up in. Funny how some things never really change
  • Friday night we had dinner at my mom's friend's house and then went to KW symphony. They are putting on a concert series where they cover music and that night it was music from Ray Charles. It was actually really good!
  • Saturday morning I went out for breakfast with my younger brother, my dad and his wife. It was nice to catch up with them.
  • in the afternoon, my mom, my future SIL and myself went for lunch, pedicures at Gina's and then to see The Other Women. A fun afternoon!
  • on Sunday, family and friends came over for a get together. It was great to see everyone!
  • Monday was spent going for a walk, taking a nap, watching a terrible made for TV movie and hanging out with my mom before heading to the airport
Mr. D sent me this picture while I was gone :)
Myself and my mom's friend
M, myself and my mom after our pedicures

Myself and my brothers at my younger brother's new shop

Overall, a great weekend! I'm looking forward to going back at the end of May again. And thank you again to my mom for everything!

The positives about not running

Since my knee injury has left me unable to run {fingers crossed it's only for now!!}, I have been struggling to stay positive about things. But, I am trying. So, here is my list of the positives about not running:
  • my pedicure doesn't chip two days later
  • less laundry because I'm not sweating through my workout clothes
  • saving money on not having to buy gels or fuel
  • don't have to shower as often. Lifting weights at home does not equal sweaty and gross hair
  • get to sleep in on the weekends!
  • I'm not quite as tired all of the time
Tell me: what are some positive things you can think of about not running?

{what I'm loving}

I don't even think this link up is around anymore, but I haven't done one of these posts in a while, so I thought I would today.

Let's see what I'm loving this week:
  • all of your comments on my post yesterday. It wasn't easy for me to write and admit that the marathon isn't happening for me this year, but your comments made me feel better. So thank you!
  • only working two days this week and four days next week
  • heading to Ontario tomorrow for four days to spend time with my family
  • the gorgeous weather we have been having lately. Keep coming sunshine and warm temperatures!
  • garage workouts
  • catch up email chats with friends
Tell me: what are you loving this week?

Scotiabank Calgary marathon: training week twelve

Another week of no running in the hopes that my knee would start feeling better. But, no luck at all :( I was going to recap what I did last week instead of running, but I apparently did a really crappy job of recording it. Aka I have nothing in daily mile from Monday to Saturday, which is definitely not like me.

I have really been dreading writing these words because then they are true and I can't do anything to change it, but I won't be running the Scotiabank Calgary Marathon on June 1st :( I was really hoping that time off of running would help my knee, but it hasn't gotten any better at all. I tried running on Friday, but couldn't even make it half a mile without pain. Poor Mr.D had to witness a very emotional breakdown after the running attempt. Even thinking about it now makes me want to cry.  I wish I could say that my knee would heal in time for the race, but I highly doubt it will be.

I think the thing that I am struggling with the most about this is that I put so much time into training and was on track for a strong marathon. But, I guess this wasn't meant to be my race and life has other plans for me. I doubt that she feels this way, but I also feel like I disappointed Solana in a way. She was kind enough to put a training schedule together for me and answered any and all questions I had. I promise that once my knee heals, I will be back to take on the marathon and will be coming back to you for training help! :)

For now, the tears have dried up, but I have a feeling they will come back when I get my first and second DNS (did not start) this weekend and on June 1st. Fingers crossed my knee heals up and I can run a fall marathon.

Tell me: have you ever had to stop training and drop out of a race because of an injury?

Scenes from the weekend

Happy Monday everyone! I was off Friday and am off today too, so have been enjoying an extra long weekend. I only work two days this week too (heading to Ontario on Thursday), so really looking forward to that!

Let's see what we were up to this weekend:
  • went to the mall on Friday, which was surprisingly busy!
  • went to Butterfield Acres with our nieces and family on Saturday for the legendary Easter egg hunt.  They also had animals, which you could pet and feed.
  • after the farm, we went to my SIL sister's house for dinner. It was a laid back and fun Easter
  • on Sunday, we took Harley for a long walk in Bowmont park. It was a windy, but sunny day out!
  • the rest of the day was spent cleaning the house and finishing Suits.
Today, I am off to get a massage, get groceries, take trouble for a walk and workout. Perfect way to end a long weekend.

Tell me: how was your weekend and Easter?

DIY medal hanger

A couple months ago, I switched offices at work and no longer had a place to hang all of my medals from. After thinking about for far too long and not wanting to pay $70 for one, I finally decided to pick up everything I needed for it. This is a super easy tutorial that anyone could do!

Required
  • nails
  • wood in your choice of shape and size
  • stencil
  • paint
  • paint brush
Steps
1. Paint your wood in your choice of colour
2. Once dry, stencil your choice of words or saying
3. Hammer in as many nails as you want (I used six nails about two inches apart)
4. Hang up on the wall and hang your medals from it

Total cost was less than $9 (I had already had the nails, paint brush and paint. Just had to buy the piece of wood from Michael's)

Tell me: how do you think it turned out? Would you rather pay for one or make it yourself?

Scotiabank Calgary Marathon: training week eleven

Eleven weeks down, only seven more (or 46 more days!) to go. This training cycle is going by quickly, but I also don't want it to. I need more time to heal! This was the week of zero running. I really want my knee to heal, so no running will hopefully help with that. I started feeling antsy on Tuesday if I am being completely honest! I also felt like I had so much free time and remembered that's what it's like not to workout or train for a marathon ;)

Five on Friday

{one} Happy Friday everyone! Is it just me or did this week go by really slowly? Wednesday felt like it should be Thursday and Thursday felt like it should be Friday. Hate when that happens!

{two} I got to snuggle and hold little Leo last night. He's such a cutie :) Plus, I got to catch up with Nicole, which is always nice too :)

{three} we don't have anything planned for this weekend except I'm meeting a friend for lunch on Sunday. Looking forward to having a quiet and relaxing weekend.

{four} I had such a craving for chips last night. Probably a good thing that we didn't have any because I would have destroyed that bag.

{five} I posted this on Twitter last night, but is there anything better than getting home and taking off your bra. Be free ladies, be free!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Running: alone or in a group

As I sit on the couch with my fingers and toes crossed that my knee is going to start feeling better and that I can start running again, I was thinking about training and the benefits of running alone or with a group. When I started running over 4 years ago, it was myself and occasionally Mr.D with me doing the sad and slow loop around our block. Ever since then, I have mainly trained for my different races alone. Except for last year when I had an amazing training partner {hi Erica!}.

The main reason that I never joined a group of runners through a store like the Running Room is because I was always afraid of holding the group up or not being able to keep up with the group. That and I am so nervous in new social situations that I'd end up blabbering my mouth off or saying something embarrassing ;) I have heard nothing but good things from friends who have trained with groups though. I can definitely see why they would say that - lots of motivation from the others in the group, helps keep you accountable with your running and the chance to chat and make new friends along the way.

This training cycle for the Calgary Marathon has been tough as I have been doing it alone. It's hard to find others who have the same pace, schedule, distance and that you actually want to spend 3 hours with every Saturday morning! Erica and I have met up for part of my run once this training cycle {she's pregnant which is why she is not running the full again} and it made me realize how much quicker the kilometers went by and how it kept my mind off the large distance I had to run. It's been decided that I need to make more friends who are runners :) Or suck it up and join in the Running Room group runs.

Tell me: are you runner who prefers to run alone or with a group?

Scotiabank Calgary Marathon: training week ten

Another week of training done! Last week wasn't the greatest thanks to knee pain. I should have not been so stubborn and stopped running last week, but I'm way too stubborn. I'm taking this week off and going to physio tomorrow. Fingers crossed I am back up and running soon. It's only been two days of not running and I'm already feeling antsy.

Five on Friday

{one} happy Friday everyone! Sorry for being quiet the last two days...I have had zero energy or desire to blog. I came home on Wednesday, made dinner and then laid in bed all night reading. I felt pretty guilty, but it was also very needed!

{two} has anyone from Canada seen this video? So true and so funny!

{three} speaking of the weather, it is apparently supposed to be 10C this weekend and then into the 20's next week! Craziness. Hopefully that actually happens.

{four} Mr.D's parents gave us a brand new double bed, so we sold the other one we had on Kijiji. Less than two days and $50 later, it's gone!

{five} have a great weekend everyone!
