TGIF

Happy Friday everyone! So glad that the weekend is here even if it's going to be a busy one.

The high of my week was meeting up with some of the ladies from our prenatal class on Wednesday. It's so fun to watch all of the babies grow up together and be able to chat with other moms about what our babies are going through.

The low of my week was Tuesday. Amelia was up a lot the night before and I was just dead tired all day. By 5pm, my eyes were burning from being so tired. After I put Amelia to bed, I was doing the same by 8:30pm. I felt so much better the next day!

The show we are watching is The Killing. We finally finished Parenthood (I'm sad it's over!) so we needed something else to start and found this on Netflix. Anyone else watch it?

The best money I spent was on some new clothes for Amelia. Well, they aren't new as I bought a bunch of summer stuff at Once Upon a Child. Other than that, I didn't spend any money this week.

My plans for this weekend include going to the expo to pick up my race package on Saturday, hopefully meet up with Becky and Brie and then run the 10K race on Sunday morning. And probably take a nap on Sunday afternoon :)

Flying with baby

Back in April, I took Amelia on her first flight to Ontario to see my family. I was super nervous about how it would go, but I shouldn't have been. I thought I'd share my tips for what worked for me as I know I searched for tips before my flight.

{1} give yourself extra time

I was flying within Canada, but gave myself lots of time to get to the airport and go through security. I took my stroller and car seat with me to the gate, so I wasn't sure if going through security was going to be longer. If you choose to take your stroller with you, you will have to take your baby out while they take the stroller around the other side. I lucked out and there was no lines when I went through as well.

{2} pack extra

You never know when a big poop or puke is going to occur, so pack more diapers and wipes then you think you will need. You can never be too prepared! I also packed two extra sleepers and an extra shirt for myself. I also found that dressing her in a sleeper was much easier for changing her in the airplane bathroom.

{3} don't be afraid to ask for help

As I mentioned above, I took the stroller and car seat with me to the gate and was nervous about breaking them down if other people were boarding. Luckily, an agent was more than happy to hold Amelia while I broke them down. I also had to use the bathroom on both flights, and a flight attendant was more than happy to hold her.

{4} board early

I took advantage of being able to board early, which allowed me to get situated in my seat before everyone else came on. It let me put my nursing cover, burp cloth, diapers and wipes in the seat pocket which made it easier when I needed them. It also let me stand up and rock Amelia (she was getting sleepy both times) before everyone else boarded.

I think the most important thing is try not to stress! I was nervous about Amelia having a big meltdown, but she did better than I thought she would. Sure, she cried a bit but she's a baby and I was never going to see anyone on the flight again.

Scenes from the weekend

Happy Monday everyone! We had a pretty great weekend minus a bit of a grumpy Amelia thanks to her four month shots.

{friday} during the day, Amelia and I met up with Erica and Quinn for a stroller run. Amelia was a bit of cranky girl, so it made for more of a walk then run. Oh well, it was nice to get out in the sunshine and have some catch up time with Erica. Mr.D had a work thing that meant he didn't get home until later, so it was just Amelia and I. She was a bit cranky that day and I needed to get out of the house, so we went to Winners and Shoppers Drug Mart. After she went to bed, I hung out watching tv and relaxing.


{saturday} in the morning, we took Amelia for her four month shots which she SCREAMED for! Poor girl :( Luckily she calmed down less than 10 minutes later and fell asleep for a bit. We decided to risk it and headed out for some breakfast at Cadence. Later in the afternoon, we took Harley for a long walk and then bbq'd some burgers for dinner. I discovered that I got way too much sun in the last two days!

{sunday} Mr.D let me sleep in a little bit (well, Amelia wanted to eat so that was the end of my sleep in) and then I took Harley for a long run. It was a beautiful morning and it definitely left me super sweaty! Once I got home and showered, Mr.D headed out for groceries and then for a bike ride with Justin. They were missing their weekly bike dates ;) Amelia had a nap in the afternoon and then hung out with me in the garage while I did a quick workout. I had some brown bananas to use up, so I quickly made some mini banana muffins. 

When Mr.D got home, he made us a delicious dinner and then it was bed time for Amelia. The rest of the night was spent hanging out on the couch, watching tv and blogging.

TGIF

Lisa and Amber do these posts and I thought I would join in the fun today :)

The high of my week was spending time with a couple different friends this week. I find that now that the weather is warming up, I want to get out of the house more often.

The low of my week was when Amelia decided to finally poop after five days of not doing so. Well, this could also be a high of my week {oh gosh, is this what motherhood is?}, but let's just say the poop made it everywhere. It was straight into the bath for her! And of course it was when Mr.D was at work, so I had to gag my way through it!

The book I'm reading is nothing. I don't think I've read a single book since Amelia has been born. Not good at all! I just find that by the time I get into bed, I have no energy to read and it's straight to sleep for me.

The best money I spent was going to see Pitch Perfect 2 with another mommy friend at the stars and strollers at the theatre close to us. It was nice to be able to see a movie and not have to worry about Amelia making too much noise. She fell asleep for a bit, ate and then was happy looking around/watching the screen.

My plans for this weekend include taking Amelia to get her four month shots, going for a run and enjoying the sunshine! And maybe a nap here and there :)

{amelia}: four months

Weight: she goes for her next shots on Saturday, so I'll update this post once she has been weighed then. The last time she was weighed was April 30th and she was 13lbs 5oz, so I'm guessing she is well over 14lbs now.

Length: will update shortly



Hair/eyes: still has her blue eyes and brown hair, but it's lightening up a bit

Loves:
  • standing with assistance
  • when you blow on her belly
  • watching everything going on around her

Hates:
  • being tired
  • not much other than that!
Eating: this month as brought a developmental and growth spurt, so she is eating every 2-3 hrs during the day and 3-4 hrs during the night. Still 100% breastfed.

Sleeping: this month also brought a few changes with her sleep. After we returned from Ontario, we moved her to her crib for sleeping at night. She was getting too big for her bassinet and moved so much in her sleep that it kept me up. She did well for the first few nights, but then decided to start getting up every 3-4 hours. We also started trying to create a loose bedtime and routine, so she starts getting used to it. She will go down anywhere from 7-9pm and then gets up for the day between 6-7am. She is still swaddled for naps and night time as well. 

Naps have gotten better as I've been keeping an eye on her awake time. She is good for about 1.5hrs and as long as I get the process started before then, she goes down pretty easily. She naps anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes. 

First time wearing jeans- I bought these back in February and they finally fit!
Other:
  • went on her first plane ride to Ontario on April 21, 2015 and did really well. She also got to meet my family and her cousin Charlie
  • tried out the Jolly Jumper and the exersaucer for the first time
  • wears mostly 3 month sleepers and outfits, but those are starting to get too small
  • wears size 2 Pampers swaddlers

Scenes from the weekend

Happy Tuesday everyone! It was a long weekend here, which was super nice to have Mr.D home for the extra day. The weather started out super crappy (lots of rain on Saturday and even a bit of snow!), but ended up being nice by yesterday.

On Friday night, Mr.D's good friend and his girlfriend came into town. They didn't get to our house until 8pm, so we didn't do much that night.

Saturday was a rainy day so we didn't do too much. Mr.D's friends had some other plans, so we just hung around the house. I went to get a hair cut in the afternoon and ended up taking two inches off of it. That night, we ordered some pizza and watched a movie.


Sunday was another low key day. I took Harley for a long run while Mr.D and Amelia hung out at home. Mr.D's friends left in the afternoon and then one of my co-workers and his wife came over for a visit. 

On Monday, the weather was looking up so we decided to get out of the city for a little bit. We headed to Bragg Creek for an easy hike and to let Harley run free. Amelia was great and ended up falling asleep for most of the hike in the Ergo which was nice.

This and that


Ready for another week of Leigh's rambling about anything and everything? If not, too bad because that's what you are getting today :)

  • I had a hankering for some baked goods yesterday so I made these. They were a fail :( Too much liquid, so they didn't form bars. Also way too sweet for me
  • Amelia and I have been having lots of play dates lately- it makes the day go by quickly and it's always nice to get out of the house
  • I miss sleeping for more than 2-3 hours at a time. I really hope Amelia gets through this leap/regression quickly! Haha, pretty sure I just jinxed myself 
  • I am still pumping once a day, but Amelia doesn't regularly take a bottle so I had a HUGE stock pile of milk. I signed up to be a milk donor at the Calgary Mother's Milk Bank, which gives the milk to sick babies. I took my stock pile in last week and I donated 7900mL's of milk which is pretty crazy!

  • almost two months ago, I won a giveaway through Alycia's blog to Sugarplum Lane Boutique. I took forever to decide what to order, but finally chose these leggings. Now I just need Amelia to grow into them! 
  • I also won a giveaway on Instagram for lotion from Cedar and Sparrow, which is a company based in Calgary. Speaking of which, I need to try the lotion out still!

Why I run and Training Tuesday

The other week Kaella tagged in me in a post on Instagram asking why I run. It's taken me just a little while to get around to it, but I thought I would answer it today. 

Growing up, I played sports such as soccer, swimming and field hockey. I was never a runner and dreaded when we had to do our runs at soccer practice. After high school, I didn't do much in terms of running or working out. When Mr.D and I moved in together, I slowly put on weight and wasn't happy with myself. After getting engaged, it motivated me to start working out and running again. I started with the Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred dvds and "running" a short distance around our place. I remember how hard those runs were in the beginning and it felt like I would never be able to go more than 500m's without being out of breath. Once the wedding passed and I had more time on my hands, I decided to start taking running seriously. I slowly built my way up to running 5kms to 10kms to my first half marathon. After completing many half marathons, I decided to try something new in the form of crossfit. Crossfit made me so much stronger not only muscle wise, but mentally as well. Pushing through those tough workouts definitely helped me through labour!

My reasons for running and working out:

{one} my health- since I started working out and running regularly, I have barely been sick (knock on wood!). I think being active and healthy plays a huge role in that!

{two} my sanity- since having Amelia, going for my long run on the weekend helps my mood so much. Even if I am dead tired that day from being a mother, it allows me room to clear my head and have some time to myself. That lets me come back home and be a better mother.

{three} as Amelia grows up, I hope that I am setting a good example for her. I hope that she knows that being outside and being active is a good thing and that she can do it too! Even though it's a lot of work to push the jogging stroller, I can't wait until she can cheer me on from it!


{four} I love it! Sure, some days the runs/workouts are tough, but I love working out. From the sore muscles to the sweat to the getting through a tough workout- I love it all! I'm one of the weird ones!

Scenes from the weekend

I don't know about you, but I had a great weekend. A mix of relaxing, family time and Leigh time. Perfection :)

{friday} Mr.D had some errands to run after work and Amelia had fallen asleep in my arms, so he grabbed some sushi for take out. A pretty quiet night hanging out at home :)

{saturday} in the morning, Mr.D and Justin headed out for their weekly date (aka bike ride). After Amelia had a nap, I headed over to Alison's house so we could check out the garage sales in her community. The garage sales were a little disappointing, but it was nice to get out for a walk in the sunshine and have some girl talk. Plus I got to see Delainey :) Once I got home, Mr.D's parents arrived for a visit. My mother in law and I took Harley for a walk in the afternoon while the guys installed our new garage door opener. Amelia also got to practice her jumping skills in the jolly jumper that Alison and Justin lent us {thanks again!}. We had a fabulous dinner of steak, sweet potato, salad and beans. So good! 


{sunday} my first Mother's Day! Mr.D kindly let me sleep in a bit longer in the morning while he got up with Amelia. Once I was up and Amelia went down for a nap, Mr.D made us all a delicious breakfast of pancakes, hashbrowns and bacon. He makes the best breakfasts! Mr.D's parents left shortly after breakfast to make the drive home, so Amelia and I had a nap on the couch. Once I got up, Harley and I went for a long run just as it was starting to sprinkle...such is my luck! The rest of the day was spent hanging out and watching Parenthood...we are almost through the 5th season. I'm not ready for it to be over! A pretty relaxed Mother's Day, but it was filled with my favourite people.

This and that

Well, I seemed to have blinked and it's Friday already! I meant to blog more this week, but time just got away from me. Onto my random thoughts for the week:
  • Amelia has decided sleep is no fun since we got back from Ontario. Well, she does sleep but just in shorter increments. I'm not sure if it's an early sleep regression happening or if it's because we moved her to her crib. Either way, please start sleeping longer again!
  • can the political "discussions" on Facebook stop already?
  • I signed up for a baby and mom workout class that starts next week- I'm looking forward to it! Even if Amelia needs a bit of attention, it will be nice to get out of the house and meet other moms
  • I don't get people on Instagram who use the Fitsnap app with a picture of their Garmin...isn't that what the app is for and for you to use a picture of you running/working out?
  • Sometimes I wonder why I own real clothes anymore- if we don't have something to do, I am usually in workout clothes as I'll do a workout at home, go for a run or take Harley for a walk
  • when does post partum shedding stop?! I swear I'm going to be bald soon with all of the hair that I am losing
  • happy early mother's day to all of the mother's and soon to be mother's out there!

Another week of workouts done! Race day is getting closer and I'm getting a bit nervous! I'm not following a training plan, more just running when I can and doing a long run on the weekends. Fingers crossed it gets me across the finish line :)

  • 4.68km {6:54/km pace} run with Harley and Amelia. Not a great run at all, but those are bound to happen

Scenes from the weekend

Happy Monday everyone! Another weekend has gone by and it's already May....this year is flying by. Let's rewind to see what we were up to on the weekend:

{friday} in the morning, I met up with Erica and Quinn to go for a run along the river pathways. It was so nice to have company which made the 6kms go by quickly! During our run, we both asked each other what we had up for the rest of the day and both had the fabulous idea of lunch at the Lazy Loaf and Kettle. It was pretty busy when we got there, but it was nice enough to sit outside. 

I promise Amelia likes Erica :)


After lunch, we made a quick stop at Value Village and then headed home. We took Harley for a quick walk as I didn't bring him for the run. The rest of the night was spent hanging out at home.

{saturday} in the morning, Mr.D and Justin had their weekly biking date ;) Those two see each other more than Alison and I do! Haha. While they were biking, I did some laundry and took Amelia and Harley for a walk. Once Mr.D got home, we didn't do much for the rest of the day. Pretty much got caught up on Parenthood and hung out :)

{sunday} the day started off a bit roughly as Amelia was up more than usual through the night and then wanted up for the day at 6am. Luckily, I fed her and then Mr.D took her so I could get some more sleep. Once I was up, I did some stuff around the house and then went for a 8km run with Harley. Amelia loves to look forward and see what is going on, so we practised the hip carry with the sling Erica lent us.
