TGIF

Happy Friday everyone! So glad that the weekend is here...even better is that it's a long weekend and the weather is supposed to be fantastic!

The high of my week was going for a walk with a friend yesterday. I'm not sure why, but I've been in a bit of a slump again this week, so it was nice to get out of the house even for 30 minutes.

The low of my week was Amelia having a couple bad nights. She was up between 3-5am (not straight) and just wouldn't settle. Luckily, last night was better.

The best money I spent was

The best meal we had was a couple things. Mr.D made quiche with sausage, mushrooms and peppers one night and then last night made Greek chicken and potatoes with tzatziki. It was so good!

The things I'm thinking about are:

  • what kind of car seat to get for Amelia next? She's not close to growing out of hers, but Toys R Us has a sale on so I thought I would start getting recommendations.
  • how I'm glad the 21 day fix extreme is done. I enjoyed it, but was pretty tired by the end
  • how I wish I could find some bathing suit tops that work with these boobs. I also really need new shorts as lots of mine are too big (first world problems I know)

Another week of workouts done! We are almost done with the 21 day fix extreme....I've enjoyed it, but am ready for a break from it. I'm thinking I'll start running more again once we are done and mix in some CrossFit style workouts.

Scenes from the weekend

Happy Monday everyone! This weekend went by too fast as always. Though I'm excited because this is Mr.D's last week of work until the beginning of September. So looking forward to having lots of time with him!

{friday} oh man, I honestly can't remember what we did. It obviously wasn't exciting as I have no recollections. Ooh, I know that we stayed up way too late (aka 11:30pm) watching The CrossFit Games and then Mr.D signed up for Instagram, so I had to explain it to him. Holy, we are old and lame.

{saturday} Mr.D and Justin left for their bike date early in the morning, so it was just Amelia and I (and Harley too). Amelia had a crappy nap and I was so tired, so we ended up cuddling in bed for a long time. I finally got my act together and we took Harley for a long walk. Mr.D got back from his ride around 1:30pm and then did some work on our vehicle. I needed to get out of the house later that afternoon, so I ran to get a few things I needed and some dinner for us from The Chopped Leaf. After Amelia went to bed, I did the 21 day fix workout and then we watched Broadchurch {anyone else watch this on Netflix?}.

{sunday} Amelia had a bit of a rough night (she was up from 4:30-5:15ish for some reason), and luckily didn't get up until 7:40am which meant we both got to have a sleep in. After her first nap, Mr.D took her and Harley for a walk while I got to go for a solo 7km run. Best part of the run was definitely finding $5!

After we both got home, we decided to quickly shower and head downtown to Eau Claire to the pet festival that was going on....thanks for mentioning it on IG Alison! They had a dog jumping contest (where they jump into water) and some of the dogs didn't want to jump off the platform after the ball...it was hilarious! Amelia fell asleep in the Ergo, so we did a walk around. It started raining and we didn't bring jackets so we headed home. The rest of the day was spent getting groceries, making muffins and trying to entertain a fussy baby until bedtime.

A Day in the life

I thought it would be fun to do another day in the life post so I can remember what life was like right now. I also wanted to link up with Julia's link up, but I didn't get my act together in time.  You can find my last one here.

Amelia was almost 6 months old (two days short), Mr.D was 32 and I was 28. I recorded Wednesday July 15, 2015.

6am: Amelia wakes up and is ready to start her day. Luckily, Mr.D still takes this shift and takes her downstairs. I go back to sleep quickly after he gets up.

6:30am: someone is hungry, so Mr.D brings her up to me in bed so I can feed her. Once I'm done feeding her, I pump and Amelia hangs out on the bed practicing her rolling

  7am: done feeding and pumping, so we head downstairs so I can have breakfast, freeze the extra breast milk and put away the dishes from the night before

  7:50am: Amelia is starting to get fussy, so we head upstairs where I read her a book, sing the bedtime song and put her down for a nap

7:57am: after rolling around and babbling a bunch, she is finally asleep. I decide to go lay in bed and doze off for a while

9:26am: Amelia finally had an awesome nap (the last couple of days were rough in the nap department). I feed her, change her and get myself and Harley ready for a run

9:56am: we head out the door for a slow 4.2km run

  10:25am: we are back from our run, so I quickly chug some water while Amelia plays on her mat. 

10:40am: we head into the basement to watch some TV while Amelia jumps in the jolly jumper. She is loving this lately!

11:10am: Amelia is cranky, so we head upstairs to do the bedtime routine again and put her down for a nap

11:21am: I don't hear her anymore, so I check the video monitor and she has finally fallen asleep. I try and order photobooks while eating left over spaghetti squash and turkey meatballs from the night before.  


12pm: I hear Amelia wake up just as I was starting to clean my bathroom. I decide to leave her for a couple minutes (she wasn't fully crying yet and her nap was under an hour) hoping she would fall back asleep, but no such luck. I head into her room to get her out of her crib then I feed and change her.

12:30pm: Amelia is pretty happy, so I decide to lay her on some blankets on the bathroom floor while I finish cleaning the bathroom



12:35pm: Mr.D calls and says that he is on his way home

12:45pm: Mr.D is home from school and has lunch while Amelia and I play on the floor

1:20pm: we started talking about giving Amelia rice cereal, so we decided to try it. She seemed to like it and I think it went everywhere!

2:04pm: Amelia is ready for her next nap, so Mr.D goes upstairs to put her down. While she is napping, we do the pilates workout from 21 day extreme fix

2:55pm: head upstairs and decide to quickly hop in the shower while Amelia is still sleeping

3:10pm: done showering and head to the basement to blow dry and flat iron my hair (it was hot this day, and it was way too hot to do upstairs). She wakes up while I'm almost done flat ironing my hair, so Mr.D goes upstairs to get her. Once I'm done, I feed her

4pm: I leave Mr.D and Amelia in the basement playing to run to the grocery store and to pick up Harley from doggie day care. He had a good day playing like always!

4:40pm: I get back home and start making dinner. We had broccoli and cheese quinoa casserole from Iowa Girl Eats that night. So easy to make and so yummy!




5:10pm: we attempt to put Amelia down for one last nap of the day. I find this time of day so hard as she needs another sleep, but doesn't always want to go down again. Today is one of those days.

5:41pm: we decide to get her up as she is screaming and having none of going to sleep. I give her a quick feed while Mr.D eats. Once I'm done, he takes her so I can eat and finish up the dishes

6:20pm: I head out to meet Alison at the movies. We saw Magic Mike XXL

9:20pm: movie is done and text Mr.D to let him know I'm heading home

9:40pm: arrive home and chat with Mr.D about how Amelia went down that night (it did not go well and she screamed for 15 minutes a couple of times). I hear Amelia start fussing again, so I go into her room and couldn't resist rocking her quickly. She settles back down, so I get ready for bed. I head to bed and check social media before heading to sleep

And another day is over and done with!

{amelia}: six months

Holy smokes! Amelia is already half a year old and my maternity leave is half over. Time is flying by! This age is fun as she is learning so much and discovering lots.

Weight: 16lbs 3 ounces (50% percentile)

Length: 66cms (50% percentile)

Hair/eyes: hair is still thinning out and it's a mix of brown and blonde. Still getting lighter though. Eyes are still very blue- she got those bad boys from me!

Loves:
  • jumping in the jolly jumper or jumperoo
  • sitting in her high chair
  • rice cereal
  • bath time
  • her bottle at bedtime
  • rolling in her crib 
Hates:
  • being tired
  • when her bottle is empty
Eating: she is still 100% breastfed, but gets one bottle of breast milk (around 4-4.5 ounces) at bedtime. She usually eats right after each of her naps, so anywhere from 2.5-4hrs in the day. Close to her 6 month birthday, we decided to see if she would like rice cereal and she gobbled it right up! We have also tried carrots, which have not been a hit with her so far. Bananas or avocados are up next.



Sleeping: oh sweet sleep! The past couple months had been really rough in this department, so Mr.D and I decided to sleep train Amelia when she was just over 5 months old. We used a program called sleep sense and Taren gave to me. She was also a HUGE support for me and let me ask a million and one questions about it. Thank you again Taren!

The program does mean you have to let your baby cry it out, but gave the option of staying in the room with them which was a bit easier. The first night, Amelia cried for 35 minutes and then fell asleep. She woke up a few times that night, but slowly over the next couple of nights she didn't need us to help her back to sleep. If she wakes up now in the night, she will usually fall back asleep in 5-10 minutes. It also takes her maybe 10-15 minutes at the most to fall asleep at night once we put her down. The program also meant that we had to take away the soother and swaddle, which we weren't sure how it was going to go. Luckily, neither have been a big deal.

She goes to bed between 7-8pm and is usually up around 6am for the day. There have been a multiple wakes up in the 5am range, but they are slowly improving. She naps 3-4 times per day and they range anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours. 

It has been so worth it to us and has made a big difference in Amelia as she is so much happier when she gets a solid sleep at night.



Other:
  • still wearing a mix of 3 month and 6 month clothes
  • still wearing size 2 swaddlers, but wears size 3 baby dry at night
  • no sign of any teeth yet

Scenes from the weekend

Happy Monday everyone! I'm struggling to remember what we did this weekend {I really need to start taking more pictures or writing it down!}, so we'll see how this goes ;)

{friday} it was absolutely pouring rain in the morning, so Amelia hung out in her high chair while I baked some cookies. We had a little dance party and threw a toy for Harley...perfect morning at home minus the crappy weather. In the afternoon, Amelia and I braved the weather and went to check out a Gymboree class with my friend M and her son. She seemed to like it, but you can't drop in which kind of sucks. I might try it out for a month after summer holidays though. The rest of the afternoon was spent hanging out at home and watching the movie Unbroken while Amelia and Mr.D had a nap on the couch.



{saturday} in the morning, Mr.D let me have a sleep in until 8:30am which was fabulous! While Amelia took her nap, we did the 21 day fix workout and then got cleaned up. In the late afternoon, we headed out to my SIL sister's house for a BBQ as Mr.D's brother, his wife and three girls were in town. It was a beautiful afternoon and nice to see them. We ended up heading home around 6:30pm as Amelia was having super short naps all day and was just a tad cranky.

{sunday} Mr.D and Justin had their weekly bike date in the morning, so I had a nap while Amelia did. Once we were up, we headed out for a 6km run with Harley. In the afternoon, we had to take the car in to get some repairs done. Once we got home, Mr.D hung out with Amelia while I mowed the grass and picked some weeds. We made delicious and easy pizza for dinner and then went for a short walk to distract Amelia has her last nap fell at an awkward time.

TGIF

Happy Friday everyone! It was POURING rain here yesterday, but it was kind of nice to have a break from the heat. But, I'm also not quite ready for fall like weather. 

The high of my week was a bunch of things:
  • having 'me' time in the form of getting my hair done on Tuesday and seeing a movie with Alison {we saw Magic Mike XXL...meow}
  • having Mr.D home in the afternoons
  • finding out that I donated another 3800mLs of breast milk to the milk bank, which brings my total to almost 12 litres!

The low of my week was when Amelia decided to have a poop explosion when I was out in public. If you don't follow me on Instagram, I was out on Monday and I heard her poop just as I was pulling into Toys R Us. I went into the bathroom only to find the poop had made it's way up the back of her onesie and of course I didn't have a spare! Many wipes later, I got her cleaned up and walked through the store with her half naked so I could buy her a new one, haha. Oh man, I could only laugh at that point!

The show we are watching is nothing really. Well still watching SYTYCD and Suits, but not much else besides that.

The best money I spent was on getting my hair done, going to a movie, some new summer clothes for myself from the Gap outlet and a high chair for Amelia. I spent a lot this week, but it's definitely not typical.

Our plans for the weekend include having dinner with my BIL, SIL and nieces on Saturday and that's it so far.

Body & mind after baby: six month update

How the heck am I already six months post partum?! It still feels like I just had Amelia yesterday. As much as I miss her sweet little newborn self, I don't miss all those crazy things that happen to your body after giving birth.

Body update

The last three months have brought more changes to my body in good ways. I've stayed super active between walking Harley every day, running, baby & mom boot camp or 21 day fix. Some may look at my weekly workouts and think I do a lot, but it helps keep me sane and makes me feel better about myself. Plus, I love a good sweaty workout! I'm currently sitting below my pre pregnancy weight, but still need to tone my stomach. It's a work in progress and I know it will take some time :) My linea nigra is still hanging around, but it's getting lighter and lighter.

Even though I've lost the pregnancy weight, my body definitely isn't the same in terms of fitting clothes. My boobs have gotten a bit smaller, but I still find them hard to dress.  I also find that my jeans just don't fit the same anymore either. It's crazy how many changes my body has gone through in the past year!

Mind update 

Overall, I'm definitely getting into a groove with being a mom and being home with Amelia. There are still tough days especially when Amelia is extra fussy, but it's getting better. I think the biggest thing that has helped is that Amelia is sleeping better at night {sleep training was so worth it!} which means I'm not dead tired in the morning and requiring multiple naps each day. I also find that I'm not as short on patience because of this as well. The other thing that has helped is Amelia finally taking a bottle again! This means that I am able to have some 'me' time even if it's to go get groceries alone.

I've also found that it's easier to get out with Amelia now, so I don't feel so house bound all the time. We still see the ladies from our baby class about once a month, which has been great.

{a review}: 21 day fix

As I've mentioned multiple times on the blog, Mr.D and I recently completed the 21 day fix. We both needed something to kick our butts and get us more active. This definitely did it for us!

The workouts

In the program, there are nine different workouts that rotate through the three weeks. Each workout is only 30 minutes long and you only need some free weights. The workouts are:

1. total body cardio
2. upper fix
3. lower fix
4. pilates fix
5. cardio fix
6. dirty 30
7. yoga fix
8. plyo fix
9. 10 minute fix for abs 

In the third week of the program, you have the option of doing double workouts each day (meant to be done at different times of the day). We chose to do the double workouts and were dead by the end of the week!  

I personally loved how the workouts targeted your whole body and focused on different parts each day. I also love how you use weights for some of the workouts, which makes it as easy or as hard (depending on the weights you use) as you want it to be. Another big plus for me is that we can easily do them at home after Amelia has gone to bed or even when she is content playing on her play mat during the day.

The meal plan

I can't comment on this part of the program as we didn't follow it. The main reason is because I am still breast feeding and I didn't want to mess with my supply. I think once I am done with breast feeding, I may do the whole thing again with the meal plan to see if it makes a different. We did try and clean up our meals and limited our snacks as well.  

Final thoughts

I think my biggest complaint about the program is how many times she says "yeah" in it! I know that it's silly, but once we started noticing it it was hard to stop! My other complaint is that they screwed up the timer clock (or she is terrible at counting) as she would be saying 3-2-1 when the clock already said 0. Silly I know!

Scenes from the weekend

Another weekend has gone by, but it was a fun one :) Let's see what we were up to:


{friday} my memory is failing me, but I don't think we did too much in the afternoon when Mr.D got home. We did run to the mall to grab some dinner and to hopefully let Amelia have a short nap (her last nap fell too late), but no such luck. It resulted in a lot of crying at bedtime, but she finally did go down without help. After Amelia was in bed, Mr.D went to meet up with Justin as they were going to a bike related movie (anyone surprised? haha). I spent the evening working on a couple photo books and watching Step Up on Netflix. Wild night over here ;)

{saturday} after Amelia's morning nap, we took Harley for a walk before it got too hot out. Mr.D ran out to get some bike stuff while Amelia and I hung out at home. In the afternoon, we decided to take Amelia swimming for the first time to see how she liked it. She didn't hate and didn't love it...I guess it's better than screaming her head off! After swimming, we grabbed some stuff for dinner and spent the night hanging out at home.

{sunday} Mr.D and Justin were gone for their weekly bike date, so after I put Amelia down for a nap I went for one myself. They lucked out and didn't get rained on even though it was pouring here! Once Mr.D was home,  I ran to get some groceries and then took Harley for a hot run (the rain had finally stopped and the sun was out in full force again). That pretty much sums up our weekend!

TGIF

Thank goodness it's Friday friends! I'm not sure if it's the heat or Amelia deciding to practice her rolling over instead of sleeping for naps, but my moods have not been great this week. But it's the weekend so cheers to that!

The high of my week was having Mr.D home in the afternoons. He is only working mornings right now, so it's been great to have him home for part of the day.

The low of my week was just being in a grumpy mood for no reason. Hopefully it passes!

The show we are watching is The Fall on Netflix. We are only a couple episodes in so far, but it's good. A lot of story lines happening at once though.

The best money I spent was on a new pair of sunglasses. I desperately needed a pair and sucked it up and bought a good pair of polarized ones. I also bought a few cute things for Amelia at Carter's for summer.

Our plans for the weekend don't include too much so far. Probably lots of hiding in the basement to get away from the heat!

This and that

I'm sure that you've noticed that I haven't been posting much lately and I'm struggling to come up with stuff to post about. Anything you want to know about? Since I can't think of anything good, you're getting a bunch of random for today.


  • I was in a foul mood the other night so I decided to make some cookies. Four cookies later yesterday, I probably shouldn't have made them. Who wants to come over and help me eat them?
  • Amelia has rolled over three times in her crib (from back to belly) now and of course I missed each one! It's the funniest because I'll check our video monitor and there she is on her belly just looking all around
  • we are starting 21 day extreme fix tonight....I think it might kill me, haha
  • I have a hair appointment next week and am tempted to cut my hair shorter...but I also wear it in a ponytail almost every day which would make that hard. What to do?
  • speaking of hair, I have a bunch of tiny short hairs around the front of my hair line and they are driving me nuts!

Training Tuesday

Last week's workouts included LOTS of 21 day fix! Mr.D and I were on the last week of the plan, so that meant double workouts all week.  I think I'll do a review of the workouts shortly for those who are interested.

Scenes from the weekend

Happy Monday everyone! We had a pretty full weekend, so let's see what we were up to:


{friday} on Friday afternoon after Mr.D got home, we headed downtown to apply for Amelia's passport. We were hoping lots of people would be off work and busy at the stampede, but no such luck as it was crazy busy in there! I think we ended up waiting about an hour, so it could have been worse. After doing that, we made a quick stop at the mall so I could return a few things at Old Navy. The rest of the day/night was spent hanging out at home.

{saturday} Mr.D and Justin were off on their bike date, so it was just Amelia, Harley and I. We went for a walk in the morning. In the afternoon once Mr.D got home, three of his friends came down from Edmonton for the night. We spent the afternoon just hanging out and BBQ'ing some food before a sudden and crazy hail and rain storm blew in! It came out of no where really quickly and was gone within ten minutes. The boys went out for a late dinner, so after I put Amelia down I did a quick 21 day fix workout, had dinner and watched Magic Mike as it was on TV. Crazy and wild night for me ;) 

{sunday} I was up early with Amelia as a certain someone was a little hung over. I ended up taking her and Harley for a car ride to Tim Horton's and Sobey's so we wouldn't be too loud. Once the boys were up, we made breakfast and then they headed home around noon. The afternoon was pretty quiet as Mr.D wasn't feeling so hot (hahahah) and I got in a long nap which was fabulous. We started watching The Fall on Netflix...has anyone seen it?
