Five on Friday

Happy Friday friends! So ready for the weekend even if I only worked 2.5 days this week ;)

{one} ooh I'm so excited for fall tv shows! Grey's Anatomy, Quantico, This is Us, etc. What are you watching lately?

{two} when I decide to stop running for a couple of weeks again, don't let me okay? Getting back into running is hard! Speaking of working out, I've done a couple of at home workouts lately and they've been good.

Catching up: the grandma's visit

Well, I definitely didn't mean to not blog for a week, but I had zero desire to sit down at my computer while my mom was here. Let's rewind to last week:

My mom flew in on Thursday night, but we didn't get back to our house until 10:30pm, so we had a quick catch up and then headed to bed.

On Friday, we took Amelia to Southland pool to go down the waterslides. She absolutely loved it again! It was less busy this time which was nice. I think the best part was watching my mom go on the big wrecking ball type thing they had. Haven't laughed that hard in a long time! Trying to remember what we did for the rest of the day- not much I don't think. Hung around the house and made dinner at home.

On Saturday, my mom helped us pack up some boxes and Brian made us a waffle breakfast. Amelia was entertained the whole time by playing and drawing on a box! It was pretty cute. In the afternoon, I put Amelia down for her nap and then headed out to get my hair done. My roots were so bad! That night, my mom watched Amelia so Brian and I could go on a long overdue date night. We went to The Keg and had a delicious dinner! 


Brian went biking on Sunday morning, so it was just us girls hanging out. I'm trying to remember what we did during the day- struggling to do so! Ooh I know, I let Amelia play with pudding in the morning which ended up being more eating it and getting it everywhere, haha.


My mom made us a big early Thanksgiving dinner, and Alison and Justin + the kids came over in the afternoon. Brian's mom also came down from Edmonton for a visit, so we had a big full house. The kids played so well together and Amelia loved copying everything Delainey did. Pretty sure I'm still full from that dinner. 


On Monday, we took Amelia to the zoo and had a fun time! Amelia loved seeing all of the animals and absolutely loved the gorillas and bears. It was so cute! Pretty sure the grandma's had as much fun - they were chasing each other with leaves and climbing on the bear statues. Can't take them anywhere!




  




On Tuesday, we decided to head to the mall, but Amelia threw an epic tantrum ten minutes after we got there, so we quickly headed home. She ended up falling asleep on the way home and then having a crappy nap once we got home. The weather turned windy and cold, but we decided to brave the park for a bit to get out of the house. That night, Brian took his mom out for dinner and to a concert, so my mom and I made dinner at home and hung out watching This is Us- this show has potential!

And just like that, another visit was over. Why does it have to go so quickly?! For those that have your mom living close to you, I am jealous of you!

{Amelia}: twenty months



Another two months have flown by, so it's time to do a little update on Amelia. Crazy that we are getting closer and closer to her being two years ago. Wasn't she just born?!

When I did her eighteen month update post, Amelia had just started walking. Now, she barely sits still! Always running around the house, crawling up the stairs, crawling all over the couch, etc. It's fun when we are at home, but so much work when we are in public! 


Her favourite things lately include:
  • playing at the park
  • throwing rocks in the river
  • water in any form- especially loves when you start the bath water and let her sit running her hands under the tap while the tub fills up
  • carrying books everywhere including taking one every morning to the dayhome
  • going down the slide or trying to climb up it

We haven't had a doctor's appointment since she was 18 months, but I did stick her on our home scale and she's at least 25lbs. I swear she went through a growth spurt recently as her pants are all getting shorter. Her belly is still huge, which makes me laugh. Because of that, I have to buy her shirts in 2T. Her little legs are short though as she wears 18month pants. She's still wearing size 4 diapers. 


Her favourite foods are: yogurt, cheese, pasta, grapes, bananas, muffins, bear paw cookies, rice. Still absolutely loves her bottles of milk, but does take it in a sippy cup during the day at the day home. 

She still chatters non-stop in her own little language with a few words thrown in there. She says: dadda (non-stop), baby, no, cookie (no idea how she knows that one!), all gone, more. I laugh when she goes into our pantry and says "cookie?" and points to the bear paws. Smart girl ;)


We FINALLY got her to let us brush her teeth. Just took some toddler tooth paste and now she loves it. She gets so excited when we do it after bath time. 

What else? Amelia is definitely a very strong and opinionated toddler. She knows what she wants and doesn't want and isn't afraid to let you know. If you wait just a bit too long to do bedtime routine, she is not a happy girl! She loves her sleep like her momma.

Canmore half marathon: race report

I can't even remember when I signed up for the Canmore half marathon, but it might have been after I saw Jen and Lindsey talking about running it. I had never run the race before and it looked like a scenic course, so why the heck not?! I also just checked and pretty sure this was my 14th half marathon!

Race package pickup was in Calgary the days before the race at the Tech Shop, so I went on the Thursday on my lunch hour to pick our race packages up. I was in and out of there in less than 10 minutes. The packages were pretty simple- just our race number and the buff. 

I woke up on race morning and it was cold and rainy outside! I was so tempted to stay in bed, but Jen and her husband Tom were coming to pick me up. They picked me up just after 7am and we were on our way to Canmore. We found parking pretty close to the race start and went into the school since it was raining. We pretty much stayed in the school until the last minute and even joked about going for breakfast instead, haha. Jen and I had agreed to run it together for fun, so we lined up towards the back and before we knew it, we were off!  It took a while to get across the start line, and when we reached the front we quickly figured out that there was a HUGE puddle across the start line. 


The race course winds through the town and residential area before heading onto the gravel pathways. It wouldn't have been bad on a dry day, but it was raining on and off, so the pathways were pretty soggy and puddle filled. The second half of the course is filled with way more hills that don't seem to end. Good thing we agreed to walk them! The rain quit for a bit and then picked up all the way until the finish. We were soaked by the end!

We ended up finishing in 2:12, which is totally fine with me. We were having fun chatting, jumping across the hundreds of puddles and not caring about our finishing time. Thanks again Jen for running with me!

Scenes from the weekend

I have a feeling this recap might be kind of lame as our weekend was quiet, but that's okay. Sometimes having a quiet weekend with no plans is nice!

[friday] neither of us felt like cooking, so we got some Vietnamese take out and hung out after Amelia went to bed. Pretty sure I fell asleep on the couch at 9pm! Party animals.

[saturday] Brian let me have a sleep in and once I got up, he made us pancakes for breakfast. Later that morning, I ran to check out the kids toy and clothing sale that was happening in our neighbourhood. It ended up being a bust as barely any people had signed up and it's usually packed and crazy. When I got back, we headed out to check out the harvest festival that our neighbourhood puts on. There was lots of people there and Amelia wasn't a fan of being able to see the blow up slide, and that there was a huge line up for it. It's tough being a toddler ;) She was getting grumpy, so we decided to head home. 


Haha we were playing in her room, and I covered her in blankets while in her crib. Then tucked her in with her stuffed animals



When Amelia went down for a nap, I cleaned my bathroom and then did a workout. We didn't do much after Amelia went to bed- starting watching Six Feet Under. Weird to see the actor from Dexter and Parenthood in it.

[sunday] in the morning, Brian went to get groceries so Amelia and I hung out while I cleaned and vacuumed the house. When Brian got back, I took Harley for a 5k run in the sunshine. When Amelia went down for her nap (she ended up sleeping for 2h40mins!), I had some lunch and then crawled into bed myself. Brian headed out for a bike ride with Justin around 3:30pm. Once Amelia was up from her nap, we went to the park for a quick play time before heading home to make delicious chicken pot pie for dinner.

Five on Friday

It's Friday!! We made it friends. This week has been busy at work and I've been having some headaches. I was also super tired last night that I fell asleep on the couch at 6:30pm. 

1. I recently joined a bidding wars group on FB for my neighbourhood. I'm addicted! I got a brand new storage cube for our IKEA storage shelf for $2.25 and three maternity shirts for $8 {no, I don't need them right now, but couldn't pass up a good deal!}

2. We've tried a couple new dinner recipes that were good, so I thought I would share them:

Spicy steak tacos 
Orange glazed salmon with broccoli and cous cous
Crunchy asian ramen noodle salad

3. They posted the pictures from the Canmore half marathon and I had to "borrow" these two pictures:



Jen and I had tried to get a jumping shot near the beginning, but the photographer totally missed us. These ones were near the end and we laughed so hard at ourselves. Running in the rain with a friend can be fun! ;)

4. We don't have much planned for this weekend. There is a kids toy and clothing sale going on in our neighbourhood as well as a harvest festival, so I want to check those out. I think Brian might be biking one of the afternoons. Other than that, nothing else is planned.

5. Is anyone else watching Married at First Sight or 90 Day Fiance? Please tell me if you are so we can discuss it!

Edmonton marathon: race report

Way back after I ran the Calgary half marathon at the end of May, I signed up to run the Edmonton half marathon in August. I ran a fantastic race at the Calgary half {ran a 5 minute PR}, so I decided to train again and see what I could accomplish this time. I worked with Solana again, who had me running 4 days a week this training cycle and doing lots of speed work.  I had a pretty strong training cycle minus having to take some time off as my calf got super tight, so I had to go to physio and have dry needling done.

The race was on Sunday morning, so we headed up to Edmonton on the Saturday as my niece was also having her birthday party. I picked up my race package late Saturday afternoon, so the expo was pretty quiet which made it easy to get in and out of there quickly. The race packages included: your bib, a tshirt, and some pamphlets/coupons. 


The race didn't start until 8am on Sunday, which was kind of nice as I didn't have to get up super early. My in-laws live close to downtown (the race starts and finishes outside of the Shaw conference centre), so my MIL dropped me off around 7:30am and had no problems getting me close to the start line. Because the other races (full marathon and 10k) started earlier, I had no problems using the portapotty without waiting. I slowly made my way to the start line and before I know it, it was time to run! You can find the route map here. I have never run this race before, so I had no idea what to expect from the course. It was pretty flat except for the one mean hill that you have to run down and then up at the turn around point. There wasn't much crowd support on the course, but I do remember Lululemon having a cheer section which was pretty good.

It was a gorgeous morning out although it got pretty warm fast! The heat definitely got to me shortly into the race. The first 3-4kms of the race I was feeling good and like I was going to have a great race. Shortly after that, it all went downhill. My legs and brain DID NOT want me to run at all. I took so many walk breaks and decided today wasn't my day. It was all about getting to the finish line. Around the 13km mark, I was playing leap frog with a lady and ended up saying to her that I was going to stick with her. We ended up talking on and off, and got each other to the finish line. I definitely would have been a lot slower without her!

I ended up finishing in 1:57, so definitely not bad considering how much I walked of it.

AntiGravity Fitness with inFlight Fitness




On Saturday, Ange organized for the blog squad to try an antigravity fitness class at Inflight Fitness. Going into the class, I had zero ideas of what to expect. I also thought I was going to be terrible at it as I am not coordinated at all! What is antigravity fitness you might ask? From their website:


AntiGravity® Fitness is a unique hybrid of aerial arts and yoga. It is a low-impact cardiovascular workout that simultaneously decompresses and strengthens your musculoskeletal system. This popular fitness technique combines gymnastics, dance, pilates, calisthenics and yoga to increase your overall health and physical agility. The technique was originally created by gymnasts and aerial acrobats that used the Harrison AntiGravity® Hammock for competitions and performances, and has now been modified and enhanced to cater to the everyday athlete and to enhance your weekly workout. AntiGravity® Fitness allows you to enjoy both meanings of its nomenclature — against gravity and against graveness — manipulating physics while staying lighthearted.

Each person has their own hammock:

The Harrison AntiGravity® Hammock is a structural fabric that is connected from two overhead points. It acts like a swing or soft trapeze. The Harrison Hammock is utilized by beginners and experts alike to bend, stretch, hang, swing and relax, allowing you to increase your fitness level by incorporating a new dimension of exercise into your routine.

Alison opened her studio in May of this year, so the location is new, clean and beautifully designed inside. Her husband also teaches jiu jitsu in the studio as well.  

Before the class started, Alison went around the room adjusting each of our hammocks so they hit us at the waist line. You don't need to bring anything to the class, but do need to:
  • wear a t-shirt (no tank tops allowed)
  • no jewellery
  • wear grip socks
Before we knew it, we were getting right into it! Alison lead us through some warm ups to get used to the hammocks, and then into some exercises to help open our hips, shoulders, etc, which felt so good. The best way to describe this class is yoga mixed with some acrobatics. 





  
And then it was right into our first inversion. I had visions of falling straight onto my head, but luckily that didn't happen. Alison was a great teacher as well- she would demonstrate everything fully first, and then help guide us through the exercises.  

 




Alison thought we were all pretty darn amazing at it (haha), so she demonstrated and then helped us into a movement called dracula. I promise it looks way harder than it was! It was such a core burner too.


My two favourite parts of the class were laughing so hard until I cried at Nicole when we did the first inversion. She was terrified to go up side down, but conquered her fear with only a few "okays" to get through it. My other favourite part was when we got to literally swing on the hammocks- felt like a little kid again!

Scenes from the weekend

Oh man, I feel like I need another weekend to recover from this weekend! It was a busy one, but lots of fun things going on. 

[friday] after Amelia went down for the night, I had to run some errands (take back library books, return something to Winners, etc). Pretty sure not much else exciting happened.

[saturday]  we hung around the house in the morning, until I left around 10am to go to the inflight class with part of the blog squad. I had no idea what to expect from the class, but it was actually a lot of fun! More on the class later this week. Alison and I drove together, and we left shortly after the class as we both had to get back home. Shortly after I got home, Brian left to go biking and Amelia went down for a nap. I may have followed her shortly after that ;)



Once Amelia was up, I headed out with her and Harley for a walk in the sunshine. Our night was pretty quiet- packed a few boxes (and cut my toe badly on the tape gun- those things are sharp!)

[sunday] I was up bright and early at Jen was picking me up just after 7am to head to Canmore for the Canmore half marathon. It was pouring rain the whole drive out there, so we were less than excited to actually run the race. We may have even debated just going for breakfast, haha. I'll do a race recap later this week, but we survived and may have even had fun running it! Jen and her husband Tom dropped me back just after 12pm, so I spent some time with Amelia before she went down for a nap. I had a quick shower, and headed back out to go to Leslie's house for a Lorna Jane clothing preview. I didn't end up buying anything {still going to steal your navy capris Leslie!}, but it was nice to chat with the ladies. Before I headed home, I stopped at Superstore to pick up our groceries (we tried out the click n collect and it was so easy!) and then headed home.

Brian made a delicious dinner and we facetimed with his mom before Amelia headed to bed. I was dead tired and was very tempted to head to bed at 8pm!

Summer holidays: 2016

The first week of August, we packed up the car and headed to Penticton, British Columbia. It's a 7.5 hour drive without traffic or any stops, so I was a little nervous how it was going to go with Amelia. We dropped Harley off at the dog sitters the night before, so we were able to get on the road fairly early. Luckily Amelia did well (minus only having a 40 minute nap) and was fine playing with toys and watching lots of movies on the ipad. 

My in-laws had rented an RV for the week, so we stayed in it with them. We borrowed a pack n play from a friend, and Amelia slept well in it all week which was a relief. 

The week consisted of hanging out at the beach, going down the water slide, playing at the park and having ice cream. Brian went for a couple mountain bike rides and I ran a couple mornings before it got way too hot!

One night, the camp ground had a musician come to sing for the kids. His choice of songs was very odd at first, but more kids starting coming and participating. Amelia slowly inched her way up and before we knew it, she was up there with the big kids dancing and shaking the maraca that the guy had out. It was so cute!




On our way home from Penticton, we stopped in Kamloops to see my aunt, uncle and cousins who live there. The one afternoon we went down to check out the ribfest that was on and we walked right by a splash park. All Amelia wanted to do was go back to it, but I had nothing for her (ie: bathing suit, swim diaper, towel, etc). It was super hot and I knew it would make her happy, so I let her go wild. She absolutely loved it!




  
We were able to have a family dinner with everyone and just hang out. It was nice to spend time with my cousin as I don't get to see her enough.

The only downfall to the week was that Amelia only wanted me and no one else. I'm not sure what was going on, but it was definitely hard by the end of the week. Luckily, she was much better once we got home.
