{gabriel}: eight months

You can find his previous updates here:

One month
Two months

Three months
Four months
Five months
Six months
Seven months

Weight: I stopped by the clinic last week to weigh him, and he was 17lb 2oz. Not sure about height.

Diapers/clothes: still wearing size 3 baby dry. Wears mostly 9 month or 6-12 month clothes.

Loves:
  • screaming at the top of his lungs
  • sucking his thumb
  • crawling everywhere
  • pulling up to standing on everything
  • taking a bath

Hates:
  • waiting on food
  • sitting still
  • being told no especially if he's going for Harley's water dish
Eating: he eats a mix of purees and baby led weaning. He's getting pretty good at picking up food and getting it into his mouth. Not much that he doesn't like.

I'm still breast feeding, but it's really decreased in the number of times per day. My supply just isn't great, and it's not worth the stress, so Gabe mostly gets formula now. We switched the brand and he seems to take it way better. He usually gets a bottle (120-180 mL's) after naps and then before bed.

Sleeping: it's getting better, but still not as great as Amelia was. I was going in and giving him a dream fed, but he would be wide awake after it and angry, so it wasn't worth it. He still goes to bed around 7am and then is up between 6-7am. He has been crying out around 4am, but we have been leaving him in hopes of breaking the habit of me going in there. Fingers crossed it improves soon!

He naps 3 times per day- usually around 8:30-9am, then 12:30pm and then 3:30-4ish. His naps really vary in length.

Other:
  • this last month brought 3 new teeth for him (two front teeth and one beside it), and he was miserable while they came in
  • he quickly figured out how to pull up to standing and hasn't slowed down! I had to lower the crib really quick one day when I watched him doing it on the camera

Potty training

Okay, before I get started on today's post, if you want don't to read about pee and poop, maybe skip today's post :)

Let's rewind to the end of November- we finally decided to take the plunge and potty train Amelia. She had been using the potty at the day home for a while, but never wanted to at home. We also delayed doing it as we were having big constipation issues with her and were scared potty training was going to make them even worse. We decided to use the three day method and blocked off a weekend to do it. The first day (Saturday) went okay- a couple accidents. On the Sunday, Amelia started really complaining that it hurt to pee. We ended up calling Health Link, and they suggested taking her to an urgent care to make sure she didn't have an UTI. Brian took her and after a couple hours there (they had to wait for her to pee), it wasn't an UTI. We think it was the underwear had irritated her vagina (poor girl has super sensitive skin), which made it hurt to pee. After that, I hunted down some plain white underwear and we waited two weeks {these are the only ones I could find without any dye in them}

The next round went MUCH better! As much as the first weekend was super hard, we think it helped for the second go around of training as she knew what to expect. The first two days were spent at home and we didn't leave at all. She had maybe 1-2 accidents per day. On the third day, I really needed out of the house, so we made a quick trip to the library where she had an accident. After the third day, the accidents got less and less, and she rarely has one now.

For the first two weeks, we put her in a pull up at nap time and bedtime. We were running out of them and I didn't want to buy more, so we pretty much told her that wetting the bed wasn't good and to call us in the middle of the night if she had to pee. She had one accident, but none since then. Before bed and nap time, we make sure she has peed right before going to bed and that she doesn't guzzle a bunch of water or milk too close to it. We also bought a big adult like pee pad (they sell them at home care stores for $20), which we put on the couch during training and now on her bed in case of accidents during the night to save the mattress.

Our biggest surprise is that her constipation is getting better. She is going almost everyday now, which is much better than once a week like she was going. It definitely took some work to get her to that point (meaning lots of bribing and treats for going), but it's working.

Things that worked for us:
  • lots and lots of treats. Luckily, we had lots of Halloween candy left so we used that
  • we had a chart that she got to make a mark on every time she peed. She ddin't quite get the concept of it, but still motivated her.
  • make sure to have lots of underwear. There will be accidents and that's okay. Saves you from doing multiple loads of laundry per day
  • We ordered regular toilet seats with built in potty seats (like this) from Amazon and they are great. Means you don't have to take off a potty seat every time an adult wants to use the toilet. Thanks for the idea Alison.

Scenes from the week + end

I meant to get this up yesterday, but ran out of time and energy. Don't you wish you could buy both of those things?

Monday: we had a quiet day as the previous weekend I came down with mastitis. I was starting to feel better, but not 100%.

Tuesday: Amelia had her class in the morning, so Gabe and I ran to Dollarama to grab some stuff to make Valentine's day crafts. We didn't do much else as Amelia naps in the afternoon.

Wednesday: Amelia was at the day home, so it was just Gabe and I. I had a physio appointment in the morning, so we went to that and then headed home. I was going to drop by my work since we were close by, but Gabe was getting grumpy. He ended up falling asleep on the way home, so we didn't do too much in the afternoon besides doing a workout and cleaning the floors.

Thursday: we got a huge dump of snow the night before and it kept up throughout the day. We were supposed to go try a mom and baby/toddler workout class, but it was cancelled because of the weather. We spent the day hanging around the house and ran to the grocery store to grab a couple things for dinner. Amelia and I also played outside in the snow while Gabe napped. She loved it!

Friday: in the morning, we had a play date with our neighbours. Amelia napped in the afternoon, so we didn't do much else. I walked Harley once Brian was home, and we worked on Amelia's valentine's day cards.

Saturday: we had no plans in the morning, so we decided to take the kids to the library since we didn't go during the week. In the afternoon, I headed over to Ange's house for a girls and games afternoon. It was quite fun and nice to have some girl time!

Sunday: we had zero plans this day and ended up having a quiet day around the house. The morning was spent cleaning bathrooms, vacuuming, doing laundry and making muffins. In the afternoon while Amelia napped, I went for a 5km run with Harley.

Amelia's 3rd birthday

Amelia was talking about her birthday for at least two months prior to it. She was so excited for it! Her requests were pretty simple- she wanted cupcakes and balloons. Easy to please!

On her actual birthday, my brother and I (he was in town visiting) took her to hide n seek, which is an indoor play centre. We got there about 30 minutes after it opened and there was no one else there. It was so nice as it can get crazy busy. She had an absolute blast there running around and going down the slides. On our way home, we stopped so Amelia could pick out some mini cupcakes at Crave. Once Brian was home from work, she got to open her gifts and then we sang happy birthday after dinner. She loved it! And I can't forget that her birthday started with balloons- she loved it! When she woke up and saw them, she said "thank you so much mom and dad!"

For her birthday party, we had everyone over to our house and I loosely went with a tea party and cupcakes theme. Alison was awesome and let me borrow some decorations that she had made for D's birthday (thanks again!). I set up a craft table for the kids, which was a hit. Amelia had fun and loved having her friends here to celebrate with her!
